What do people think about removing both the current crisis system and the time jumps between ages and making the transitions themselves playable? You could have a renaissance event/crisis/mini age between antiquity and exploration and then an 'age of revolution' or similar to move us from exploration to modern. These would help explain the changes to the in-game world vis a vis IPs/city states vanishing and appearing, civs/cultures switching and buildings becoming obsolete etc. The playable transitions could also open up new mechanics that make the transition more dynamic to fit in with the rise and fall/history is built in layers concept, for example, colonial revolts or large empires enduring civil wars. The current crises could even be retained as random events that can crop up at any time in the game if people enjoy them.
Is anyone else distracted by the way the system is currently implemented? I credit the new legacy paths with nudging me to play in ways that I've always ignored in the past (peaceful science player here) but it's very jarring to be handily winning a war only to have an age end along with my momentum and be left with a neutered army with the borders frozen in place. I realise the playable transitions idea is unlikely to be where Firaxis are headed but I hope they don't neglect making tweaks to the system amidst the clamour for UI improvements.
