Hello to the civ 1 community,

Do you know if a tool or a patch exists who permits to play civ 1 DOS in hot seat mod ?

Thank you

There's the old 'multiciv' hack here, but if memory serves, that doesn't allow a mixture of human and AI players and is quite buggy. It's a fun gimmick though, I imagine under the hood it's the equivalent of hex editing the save to change player after each turn.

I just gave it a try and it seems to be incredibly fragile. It apparently requires the original version, 474.01 or it won't start. The first time it worked ok (though you can see everyone else's uncovered terrain) for a couple of turns at least. The second time, I somehow ended up with every player having 2 settlers and each settler getting 9 moves per turn each! So erm... use at your own risk I guess.

I have "civ2.exe" (6 992 bytes) (copyrighted by Timofeev and Popov, Moscow, 1993) which is different from this "MultiCiv.exe" (304 512 bytes). It indeed works only with v01, but you actually can mix human and AI civs. And you cannot see uncovered terrain of the other player, if you updated your view with mouse click. And about problems, I remember that sometimes other human player can receive a "free" wonder of the world (just like AI civ can), and also you can "talk" with other player's king, which is not always ideal, but that's how it is. Default tax rates for additional players are also like the ones for AI, 1lux/5sci/4tax or something like that. For end of turn, you should press TAB instead of ENTER, and "end of turn" option should be disabled enabled.

Are we sure we do not have this civ2.exe in civfanatics vaults somewhere?

It's here, I didn't try that one, which clearly is my loss as it sounds a lot better based on your review!

I can't get it to work.

I have the civilization .01 executable.

I try:

civ2 1 5

and

civ2 1 5 civ.exe

But nothing happens ?

Does it maybe overwrite civ.exe ? and civ.exe needs to be run ? Hmm trying it out... Nope... nothing happens. HELP I CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT ?! =D

"civ2 1 5" is incorrect,
"civ2 1 5 civ.exe" should work

I dunno, I had put civ2.exe in CIVILIZATION folder (CIV.EXE is here) and then I run it with dosbox, and it just werks. "Nothing happens" if civ.exe is actually not v01. Look closely at what is at the title screen (before "From those civilized guys...").

I never actually knew these existed! I'd have loved these about 25 years ago!

Hah yeah my mates and I used to play Hotseat CivDOS using the old MultiCiv program back in the 90s. It was buggy but we had heaps of fun and played several games over a year or so using it. If I recall you could only take control of 3 or 4 player slots and not all of them and yeah some other weird bugs would happen too. I didn't know about that alternative multiplayer civ2.exe file that's possibly better... interesting.

Technically people using these programs could do PBEM style games with CivDOS sending each other the save file. Of course people would probably end their turn and go to the other players turn and spy on what they're up to though.
