This game is very representative of a situation that I often find myself in. I think I'm too afraid of the effects on my economy that an early confrontation with the AI will have, and end up getting boxed in. 3 cities by 001 AD is unacceptable, right? Is the situation that I find myself in savable at all? What's the appropriate course of action, cuirs into backstabbing Portugal/England?

Agree with up above. 3 cities by 1ad is not good but this is deity. Hard to beat AI on 9-10 cities as if one DOW on you it's game over.

Why did you keep all that forest? It's doing you no good. Should of all been mostly cleared by now.

Thanks everyone!! All the feedback is super helpful.
Early break-outs require use of Slavery, if you're not familiar with a military build-up. Basically you need to make use of your food surplus to whip "bad tiles" or unhappies to overflow :hammers: into the next unit.
eg : Axeman with 1-4 hammers whipped with 2 pop overflows 26-30 hammers into the next build + production for the turn. So, with a little production, you basically get 2 axemen over the course of 2 turns.
Horse archer with 1-19 hammers whipped with 2 pop overflows 11- 29 hammers + production for the turn. Here it is common practice to compliment the overflow with a forest chop to, also, get 2 HAs over the course of 2 turns.
You don't necessarily need to maximize this but you need to grasp the concept enough to use it :)
I definitely struggle to harness overflow correctly. Part of the problem is that BUG seems to tall me that (some?) of the overflow will be turned into gold. And I'm not quite sure how that mechanic works. Is there any way to avoid that?

I had a feeling I was underchopping. Part of the issue is that I'm comfortable chopping out granaries/libraries/lighthouses/units, but in this game, by the time my workers were available to start chopping en masse, I was already building research/gold. Does chopping out gold work? Is it worth it going for failgold of a wonder if you don't have the associated resource? I think I maybe I should have built an extra worker to be able to chop out important stuff earlier.

Just a general piece of advice: if you're struggling with the early game it's much better to play on Immortal until you get that part down. The fact most people on strategy and tips play on Deity gives the impression that it's a doable level. On the contrary, it's due to a selection effect of a small hard core of players that's mastered the game over decades.
