So I tried to test this "game" on 4 macines that I have in my apt - it worked on only 1 and another one partially (the opening video was garbled and choppy gameplay). The other two: #1: powerfull machine with ATI graphics card - forget it - tried everything that was suggested here and on Civ official site - to no avail... the terrain is all black.

The last computer though I tested this on was my latest laptop from work - 2Ghz, 1G RAM, etc.... started to install... CD 1 went OK - when inserting the CD 2 - it froze up... tried again... did not work... tried to uninstall - there is no CIV IV in my add/remove programs... yet when I insert the first CD it asks me whether I want to PLAY... no more Install button!!! Also... I deleted all the CIV IV files manually and tried to install again - to no avail... no Install option... WTH! This really blows. Any ideas how to go about this?

P.S. They really should not have rushed the game.

OK - first up, I don't have it to check properly, but can guess a few things to try.

First option - if you look in explorer, can you browse to open teh Civ4 install CD. Is there a file in there called something like 'setup.exe' - if so, try running that.

Second option: Go to your Program files folder. IN there, there should be a folder called 'Installshield installation information' (If there isn't, then in the explorer 'tools' menu, choose 'folder options', then on the 'view' tab, check the option for 'show hidden files and folders'.

Open the 'Installshield installation information' folder. In there, you should see a whole lot of folders with weird names, like '{0AD84416-63A4-4CF3-BDDF-8FA866711FB0}'

One of those is for Civ4. Open each one in turn, and if it has a file in it called 'setup.ini', then double-click on that, and look for something that suggests that the folder is for Civ4 (eg. something similar to 'AppName=Civilization 4')

If you find a folder like that, then delete it. If installshield finds that folder, it thinks its installed already. You should then be able to reinstall.

Thank you for trying to help but:

1) when I try to browse from the windows explorer the CD - the pop-up comes up asking me whether I want to play, read the read-me file or exit...

2) when I look at 'Installshield installation information' folder, none of the files have been updated since Oct 18, 2005 AND none of them contain anything that has to do with CIV IV?!?

What is going on? Any other clues how to force CIV to re-install????

Suggestions:

1 - Try to roll back the PC to a previous restore point: Strat - Programs - accessories - System tools - System restore. In last case maybe could help. Actually, if any new program have knowned installation problems, everyone should create a restore point before install it.

2 - Check in the CIV4 drive if there is an application named "unistall" oe something like that and try to run it.

3 - Maybe you need to delete the registation of CIV4 in Windows. Is a little bit nore complicated and I do not feel confortable explaining that. Go to Start - run and type "regedit". then look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Software - Firaxis games (or some folder related with civ4). Delete that folder and try to install again.

Hope it could help you.

Kindest regards:

I followed all the steps.
Now when I put the disc in it saids "Install".
I click on the "install" it says I have 1.61 patch and the disc is 1.09, therefore I need to uninstall 1.61 before I can re-install 1.09.
Any clue I could peel off the patch? Please excuse the cross-posting, I am desperate!!
