I'm looking for a new game to play. I prefer games that are more thought driven over button mashing. I've been having fun with civ4, but I'm finding the military side of things to be oversimplified. For strategy games, I prefer TB over RT only because I like to micromanage and keep an eye on everything. Besides, I prefer a strategy game that gives me time to think. For RPGs, I prefer games with solid systems as well as plot lines. I don't mind action/rpgs as long as there some thought or technique involved. In general, I prefer games that are a little open ended or sandbox-like. Here's a list of some/most of the games I've played:

-Liked-
Civ4 (sandbox is cool)
FO 1+2 (probably my most favorite games ever, good RPG, pretty open ended)
System Shock 2 (scariest game I've ever played)
Thief Series (best stealth games ever)
Diablo 1+2 (button masher, but good plot and gameplay, especially #2)
Baldur's Gate Series (great gameplay, incredible storyline)
IWD series (Dungeon crawl with many things I liked from BG)
Planescape (incredible story and characters)
Age of Empires (didn't like the RTS bit, but otherwise a fun game)
Portal 1+2 (great puzzles, great setting)
HL1+2 (one of the few FPS I really liked)
MoM (been forever since I played, but had a lot of fun with it).
GTA series (great cities with a lot of interesting things to do)
Bioshock (horrible ending, but fun enough game)

-Disliked-
Torchlight (watered down Diablo, IMO)
FO3+NV (terrible plots, watered down system)
Oblivion (great concept and huge world but terrible leveling, magic, and equipment system)
Mass Effect (watered down action RPG, couldn't get into the story)
NWN series (The first wasn't too bad, but the second was too goofy for me)

Anyway, thanks for any suggestions.

you could play many Eastern rpgs, which are not western on PS2 or if you prefer PS3 or X360 other than just PC

For PC Heroes of Might & Magic 3 and 5 I liked or civ5,
Master of Orion 2 (old)
Also too old for now Imperium Galactica 2
Age of Wonders 1/2 (also old)
Torchlight 2 is coming soon
Warlok Master Arcane
Diablo 3
Heroes 6
Drakensang 1/2, Schwarze Auge Rpgs
Disciples 2,3
GalCiv 2
Septerra Core (old anime rpg for pc and there was another one, I forgot)
Kingdoms of Amalur I like

One amazing game you can try is STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl or it's second sequel, Call of Pripyat (the first sequel was terrible, don't get it). It's an FPS, yes, but it has a ton of RPG elements. I'd recommend trying it.

I agree with you on Oblivion, it was really only saved by mods that basically fixed almost everything (except the faces).

You should try The Witcher series both games have different approches to 3rd person combat and they have a very deep and gritty fantasy setting with good story lines.

I second the STALKER series, but Clear Sky isn't too bad since they patched it up and while flawed it is a lot of fun if you like the series.

I tried STALKER. It was the biggest gaming letdown ever for me (next to FO3+NV). I'm a huge fan of "Roadside Picnic" and I followed the development of the game for years. However, they took way too many shortcuts with the physics so combat felt ridiculous. Not to mention, they could have done a little better with the stealth system. I tried to mod it a bit myself, but there was only so much I could do.

Oblivion had such great potential. I also modded the hell out of that one. However, after the first few character levels of so, everything felt so same-y.

I don't have a problem with FPS games. I've played quite a few, though I've grown bored with twitch gaming and would prefer something that is more of a mental challenge. That's partly why I found the Portal games to be so brilliant. FPS, but all puzzle, and a good setting/story, too.

I was thinking of trying Disciples, AoW, and others like it, but I've heard most of them are mission-based, which wasn't too appealing. I've played Battle of Wesnoth, and would have preferred a more open-ended flow of the game.

I've heard good things about The Witcher, though. I like deep and I like gritty. I'll have to look into it.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far; keep 'em coming. Witcher will only keep me busy for so long. :D

CoP is an excellent game - it's well polished, it feels natural, graphics and physics are great. My only problem with it is... well, there was only one part of Call of Pripyat that made me scared, as opposed to nearly the entire bloody game in Shadow of Chernobyl.

SHoC IS a bit rough around the edges... though that can be easily fixed by downloading the AMK mod, STALKER Complete 2009, Oblivion Lost (though oblivion lost makes the game a tad easy...). Stuff like that. They work out a lot of the bugs and fix the game up to make it look like it should've been. Honestly, though SHoC is probably my favorite game of all time. That feeling when I first entered Agroprom Underground, or every single time I have to go through the X-18 Labs and the first time I went into X-16. The emptyness of the Brain Scorcher also creeped me the hell out, and Pripyat in general made me just sprint through the entire zone, only stopping to pick up the decoder. Chernobyl, too, was frightening as hell for me - the constant swarm of Monolith fighters, running low on medkits and anti-rads... Call of Pripyat didn't have a ton of that; the only times I can really say I was really frightened in Pripyat is my first time through the Jupiter Plant, and maybe the Cement Factory in Yantar. Pripyat would've been a lot scarier if it didn't have hundreds of frigging dogs roaming around.

But yeah, I'd give Shadow of Chernobyl a second try, with some mods. It's a wonderful game.

sudeki was it, but bugged awya and no patch came from the developer for soo many people

Jagged alliance ( I dont played, old)

I did all that plus a mod of my own, but I couldn't fix the issues with the physics. That alone kept me from being scared of anything. I wouldn't even have minded the crappy stealth if the physics were done right. I'm betting they used the same core engine for CoP, which means the same core physics, but tell me how they improved things.

Jagged alliance ( I dont played, old)

I wish I played this one in it's day, but now it's too dated even for me. I tried Silent Storm (supposedly inspired by this game), but it was way too unbalanced. I've also played Fallout Tactics. I know a lot of the old school FO fans hated it, but for a tactical game, it was one of the best I've played. I like it a hell of a lot more than FO3 + NV, that's for sure.

metal gear solid, resident evil, fps element and rpg element both

Are these for the PC? I've played MGS on PS/PS2. They are probably the hardest games I've played. I've also played some RE on various consoles. I was glad they got rid of all the static third person camera views (rubbish design) for RE4, but it annoyed me to play a character who was a Secret Service agent yet a worse shot than I am in real life. That's my one rule about FPS games. The protagonist has to be at least as good of a shot as I am.

CoP is pretty much a new game; I lag a lot less, different UI, more polished. I think stealth got revamped but I'm not sure.
Can you tell me what exactly aggravates you about the stealth system? Because I've never had any problems with it, never broke my immersion.

I don't recall the game physics having any real problems, hell they are barely used at all besides the psychic poltergeists throwing objects at people. There is also the bullet physics and drop, but that is definitely moddable because I noticed a huge difference (way less drop off) in Misery.

First, my system can't run The Witcher (my video card is a little outdated). I picked it up and it runs choppy on my system. I'm surprised since Portal2 worked out so well, but I had a similar problem with Mass Effect, so meh. I'm planning an upgrade in the nearish future, so it won't be a waste of money, but in the meantime, I'd like to find a good game to kill some time.

With STALKER, it was the bullet physics that were rubbish. I noticed this when experimenting with different weapons. Each one has a base MOA (minute of angle, essentially accuracy) which spreads further once you get past the weapon's "effective range". The problem is that the MOA is the same at 10m as it is at 100m, assuming the weapon's effective range is 100m or greater. Because of this, it's not a true MOA, merely a spread. That creates a problem. For example, let's say you want to mod a pistol so it has a 6in spread at 10m. It's going to also have the same 6in spread at 50m (the game's effective range for pistols). So, you have to choose between having pistols that are equally rubbish at all distances, or pistols that double as sniping weapons. Without a true MOA, every time I fired a gun in that game, I felt like I was playing Duke Nukem.

As for stealth, my main problem was that is essentially didn't exist. Everyone could see and hear you for a rather far range. It was worse than FarCry. Sniping was virtually impossible, nevermind sneaking around a group of enemies to avoid them.

Sniping is hardly impossible, once I got a good rifle (I favoured the VSS Vintorez myself) I usually had no trouble picking off enemies from a distance (of course that would alert the rest of them if they were in a group, but still).

Although yeah sneaking up to enemies doesn't really work.

Stealth is a bit of a problem but I've never had any problems with sniping. The MOA thing, though, I don't really see that as being much of a problem; if you're at 10 meters, bullet spread isn't going to matter a ton, since you're so close.

It does explain the weirdness of the bullets even when using iron sights in the first couple of games though.

That it does - I remember my first playthrough with Oblivion Lost and how easy it was because of the accuracy. I guess they attempted to "fix that" and ended up making the game too easy.

Terraria
I like it and should come cheap... Hours of fun and sandbox as well,

Sounds like you would like a RPS-strategy hybrid with deep tactical control and a good story.

Also if you want more strategy, maybe try the Total War series? These have no story-line and only gradually added any kind of RPG elements; they're basically open conquer-the-world games in a sandbox. They're semi-RTS but they can be played "turn-based" by pausing the game and issuing orders.

I'd suggest some paradox games like Crusader Kings 1/2, or Victoria, but basically the combat engines are abstract with very little control (excepting CK 1, as I haven't touched that one). Manaical could give a review of CK 1, or King Arthur.

The MOA thing, though, I don't really see that as being much of a problem; if you're at 10 meters, bullet spread isn't going to matter a ton, since you're so close.

But it does. The spread of an AK47, for example, is a little more than 1m at it's max range in that game. It's also a little more than 1m at PBR. It makes it a little difficult to get a head shot, even when you're right next to the target. I remember this one spot of the game where I turned a corner and there were three hostiles right there and quite close (almost PBR). I only had a pistol at the time and went through an entire clip hitting nothing. I thought it was odd, so I reloaded (the game) and tried again with almost the same result (I think I had 2 hits). That's when I noticed something was weird and started experimenting with the weapons.

Terraria...

I checked it out. I'm not a big MMO fan. It looks like an 8-bit counterstrike. Am I far off?
