This could be a poll, but since I still don't know how to do one....

Is it:

a) Putin's rival successors jockeying for position?
b) US/UK propaganda designed to drive a wedge between The Bear and Iran?
c) A real home-grown plot (why)?
d) A real US/UK plot?
e) Russian propaganda to smear the West?
f) Something else?

If Putin were assassinated it would be extremely dangerous, especially now.

This is awkward. I don't like Iran, the terrorists, or Putin, so I don't know who to root for!

I guess it'd have to be Iran. The threat they pose to me, personally, is so low that it's laughable.

I kinda like Putin, I'd be a very sad snake if he died.

Probably just cultivation of Putin macho-image, I doubt there even was a serious plan to assassinate him.

"They plan to kill me if I go there. I will go anyways. Because I am Putin, raaargh!"

Everybody knows that when they stop trying to blow you up you're in trouble... :crazyeye:

True, still don't you like to squash out insects that annoy you?

Seriously, this country seems to be plotting against every other country. First they were trying to ruin the East-West relations and now they're trying to kill Putin?

I read about that in breaking news... and two hours before that on Vesti.ru
I cant understand who might want to kill him except Al-Q style fundies.....
so its g), but rest assured all sides will take advantage of it.

Putin won't be killed in Iran, because everybody thinks he's going to be. And Iran doesn't have a reason to.

I don't think its the government or authorities of Iran that they are worried about. More likely groups from central asia that have a bone to pick with Mr Putin over soviet policies there...

Yeah that could be true, but I think Iran would do anything to protect putin from terrorists. At least, if they're smart :crazyeye:

I dont recall many central asians having a problem with Putin over Soviet legacies. If it is anyone it will be caucasians or fundie muslims.

After twenty some years of being called the Lesser Satan, I am sure there are some whackadoos in Iran who would be happy to off Beelzebub.

Its not the Iranian govt for sure, they would have nothing to gain and everything to lose if they did that.

My mistake! I was thinking of the Caucus, but wrote central asia instead!

Bingo!

Photos of shirtless Putin standing in the streets of Iran proclaiming: "Here I am, let's see what you can do, cowards!" forthcomming.

EDIT: Update.

Putin's trip was first thrown into doubt when the Kremlin said Sunday that he had been informed by Russian special services that suicide attackers might try to kill him in Tehran, but he shrugged off the warning Monday.

"Of course I am going to Iran," he said after talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "If I always listened to all the various threats and the recommendations of the special services I would never leave home."

The remark played into the carefully crafted image of a fearless leader that Putin has cultivated, and also appeared aimed at emphasizing that he is in control - not under undue influence from security officials - as he maneuvers to maintain influence after his presidential term ends next year.

I shudder to think of the price of oil and natural gas if it does happen.

I don't like Putin or the Iranian leadership and terrorists within.

Meh. Whatever happens, happens. Play it by ear.
