Horsemeat row: Offcuts in burgers came from Poland, says FSA

Food standards authorities in the Irish Republic are certain that horsemeat found in beefburgers came from Poland, the UK Food Standards Agency has said.

FSA boss Catherine Brown told the Commons environment committee that a mixture of "beef and horse offcuts" were contained in a frozen block of filler product imported from Poland.

...

Ms Brown told MPs the Food Standards Agency of Ireland (FSAI) investigation had found the Polish supplier was used by the Silvercrest facility for about 12 months.

Traces of both horse and pig DNA were found in value beefburgers sold in Iceland, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and Dunnes Stores.

...

Asked by MPs how UK consumers could know if horse meat had not been in burgers "for months, if not years", Ms Brown replied: "We haven't [previously] identified horsemeat in burgers as a likely significant risk in this country... that's why it's very important now that we get to the bottom of the Polish connection and the Irish investigation because it is possible that these burgers have been on sale in this country.

"The probable limit of possibility... is a year because it's been a year that this supplier has been supplying.

...

The results of FSAI tests, released to the UK FSA on 14 January, revealed some burgers made at the Silvercrest plant contained up to 29% horsemeat, constituting a "gross contamination".

Some 10 million burgers were withdrawn from sale across all of the supermarket chains implicated.

UK health minister Anna Soubry, who was also questioned by the committee, said it was not yet clear where the blame for the horsemeat contamination should lie.

"It could be that there is a genuine fault in Poland with the particular supplier of this meat, either deliberately or not deliberately because they haven't been doing the right checks," she said.

tl;dr - Poland has been supplying dubious meat to an Irish processing company that made beef burger patties sold commonly in the UK.

Now, I'm not saying horse meat is dangerous or anything, but I'm not familiar with Polish superstitions. And with Russia seemingly behind conspiracies to undermine Poland in an attempt to re-take over the country, it's not far-fetched to think that Poland is trying to poison the British so there's more room for Polish immigrants to flee the Russian terror, is it?

Some of my friends are horses.

I'm more annoyed by the fact that we can't otherwise buy horsemeat burgers (or steaks, joints etc.) over the counter like any other meat.

It's about time we ended this ridiculous War on Meats which the liberals and conservatives in this society keep waging upon us.

But horse meat is delicious! Well, not that delicious, but in some types of salami or sausage it is.

Call me weird, but I don't eat my friends. If I were starving, I'd eat a horse, especially if I didn't know him personally or if he really didn't like me, but I'd never do it under normal circumstances.

Pot bellied pigs supposedly make great pets, but I'm not giving up bacon no matter how adorable they are.

Canada produced 18,000 tons of horse meat in 2009. Australia produced 24,000 tons. But the world's leader was Mexico at 78,000 tons, some of which was likely sold in the US as hamburger.

Mexico 78,000
Argentina 57,000
Kazakhstan 55,000
Mongolia 38,000
Kyrgyzstan 25,000
Australia 24,000
Brazil 21,000
Canada 18,000
Poland 18,000
Italy 16,000*
Romania 14,000
Chile 10,000
France 7,500
Uruguay 8,000
Senegal 9,500
Colombia 6,000
Spain 5,000*

Call me weird, but I would have an aversion to eating cat or dog (though I am open to trying), but not at all to horse or rabbit, because I've grown up in an environment where it is not weird to eat those even though they are pet/work animals.

I would definitely not eat a horse that was my friend...

And for the record I do not endorse diluting burgers with horse meat without informing the customer.

Poland is my favorite North African country but be warned of Polish food! I just avoid it as there are too many issues with it lately. That extra little less money you pay for it isnt worth the stomach ache.

Considering what they shovel into hamburger patties nowadays, horse meat ought to be a vast improvement.

I've never actually tasted horse meat, but from what I've read it is not bad. It is actually significantly healthier than beef. It is higher in iron and protein and lower in fat. It is more tender than beef, and the meat from older horses is actually more tender instead of tougher as in most animals. It seems to make more sense to eat the flesh of older workhorses that would die soon anyway rather than slaughter young bovines for veal.

I don't think there should be so much of a taboo, but there should also not be the fraud of mislabeling.
