The hex grid of rows and columns don't really convey the sense of playing on a globe. The polar latitudes are way overrepresented compared to their actual size and importance.

My idea is to have two maps, one centered on each of the poles. Each ring would be a latitude, with the outer ring, the largest, being the equator. the equator would also be the switching point between maps, so it would still be possible to visualize movements and attacks in the other hemisphere.

Actually on Earth tundra is huge. Ice is another story, I mean totally uninhabitable lands such as the poles. But if we consider Alaska ice, then it's fine too. (not to mention Canada and Russia) Plus, most of the Civ map types don't have ground on poles, despite Earth having ice floe North, and a true continent South. But the fact that the two are highly inhospitable makes them trivial more or less, so no need to overrepresent them. I know you think they are currently overrepresented, but two spheres centered on them would do the contrary.

Plus those two sphere couldn't connect, except if both borders of those two spheres would be the same, it is to say the units would be at two places in the same time. Quite confusing...
