When I was in fifth grade, we were shown a safety video that warned us, among other things, to check under our (parents') cars before getting in. According to that video, there have been cases, especially in parking lots, where a criminal waits under someone's car, and then when the owner comes, the criminal slashes the owner's ankles with a blade. While the owner is distracted by the fact that his ankles are bleeding, the criminal then jumps out and steals the owner's keys and drives off (or possibly rapes the victim, or something else).
For a while that had me scared, and I even checked under my parents' car before opening the door a couple times. Eventually I realized the absurdity of this and forgot about it.
But a few minutes ago I was completing a safety informational thing online that's required for college. In this informational thing, my college's police department actually warns us students of this ankle-slasher-under-car threat. I checked snopes.com, and sure enough, this warning has no basis in reality whatsoever.
I guess I can understand a random safety video falling for an urban myth, but a professional police department? Is this common?
