Any cons to opening multiple policy trees for say eg just for the first tier or opening effect of the policy branch and then move on to an other?

no not really you wont get a finisher bonus in anything for a while I guess. one of my favorite policy choice is go for collective rule quickly then switch into piety.

^That sounds like a good idea. Especially if you roll with Byzantium. Going full tree on only Piety right at the start kinda gimps you, I find.

Some of the openers are very powerful just by themselves if you only have one city. Tradition, Patronage, Aestetics, Commerce, Rationalism. It might be good for Venice to open single trees.

The only con is losing not getting to other policies you want in other trees.

If I'm going for a CV, I always open exploration in order to built the Louvre, even if I am on a pangea and have no other use for it.
