Who should have more power the United States who are the most powerful country in the world or should the power be spilt amongst the United Nations?

I personally think that the UN should be able to handle world affairs and the US should not be able to go to wars just because our president wants to.

U.S.A. all the way! In the past Superpowers got to have power over other nations so why can't America, its our turn and you can't deny that.

America can not let other nations decide its foreign policy. However, it should work with the UN whenever possible. I don't think the UN will or will ever have enough authority to prevent nations from doing what they want anyway.

Well without military power to back it up the UN has nothing. Currently most of the UN's military power would be coming from the US, so...

I'll agree with Speedo. I'm not sure how much the European nations would welcome the idea of having the entire responsibility of UN military operations. However, the UN usually does a good job with humanitarian efforts and sometimes with coordinating joint operations with NATO members and non-members that contribute, though there is a big US contribution.

The UN can be useful for a lot of things, but right now, it should not be the be-all, end-all to every issue.

If the UN was actually a fair representation of global opinion and had some power to back up what they say, they could do some real good. :)

The UN sucks...it has no power at all, it hasn't stopped ANY war..and that's what they were founded for..to STOP wars through diplomacy..

So I say the US and England are the nations that are controlling this freaking world..

The question, here, is; can the U.N. stop us? No. So the world will have to suffer our wrath until they can.

The US will not yield to the UN and especially not to the EU ever. And remember we have nukes and we will use them.

The UN is just a forum for debate, with no real authority over any of it's members.

(The WTO is the only International organization that has any real power to enforce it's dictates.)

I think that the US was more powerful before it went unilateral this past year. The action in Iraq was taken despite the fact that it would erode the US's power base -- Bush felt it was worth taking the hit.

This question is somewhat dumb, I don't think you can really say on country or group "should" have more or less power than any other. I'm more into who DOES have the power not who should (though the US generally manages there power better than any of the tiny influence the UN has)

Here is a good saying: Get the US out of the UN and the UN out of the US.

The question is ridiculous. The one that should be more powerful will be more powerful, and thus you should ask yourself "which IS more powerful?" And you will have your answer.

The U.N. is a bureaucratic nightmare.

Libya on the HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE???

Yeah, right.

Utterly pointless rubbish.

U.S.A. all the way, baby!! :D

I wouldn't want to get rid of the UN. For all its faults, it is a forum where countries can use diplomacy more easily than having to set up an independent system for every country.

Anyways, the nature of power says that power should be where power is, so this argument is pointless.
