ME/2000. Both have been complete and utter failures when we tried to install them on my parents' old computer . . .

i've never actually had dos for an os, but i have worked on it a few time since my comptuer(as well as probably all windows os) has the dos prompt and quite honestly if i had to use that for computing i would prefer being amish. ME does suck and my father and occasionaly i use it. and XP while more stable should of just been given as patches to ME(damn greedy capitalists)

Besides, why go Mac when you can do Linux for free?

because nothing is compatable with it, and there are many versions. it is a cool novelty to play with, but for anybody that want to do anything it's mac or windows(i know it's a shame but not much that can be done)

Actually NT isn't too bad. Kinda like XP. Our school has an NT Network, and it works decently, but the computers - Yuck. I mean seriously, kinda hard to do computer drafting, 3D, etc. on a 200 Mhz, 32 Mb Ram. Ya, I haven't found many things wrong with NT.

Tell that to the millions of people who have been using linux for years to do everything they need :p

I've run nothing but gnu/linux for 14 months now, and it's done everything I need: word processing with OpenOffice is better than Word, Mozilla Firefox is FAR better than IE, Thunderbird is better than Outlook, XMMS is the same as Winamp, the GIMP is better than Photoshop, KDE has many better window-manager features than Windows, and it's all free. Throw in Unreal Tournament published for Linux, and Winex letting me play Civ3, Baldur's Gate 2, and Warcraft 3, and I have no need for Windows.

Really, I say I dislike all versions of Windows simply because I don't like software treating me like a criminal, or my computer dictating what I can do. I should be in control, and linux certainly gives you control. More than some people can handle, perhaps.

I really can't agree on that GIMP and OpenOffice statement. Comparing programs on Linux and Windows is pointless. Its one area where Windows dominates (along with gaming), Mac comes in second and Linux doesn't come close.

Linux gives you more control and performance than Mac so it makes mores sense as an alternative. Another reason Linux is a better alternative is that if you really don't like Windows then why use a product so similar. Apple has even more control over the Mac platform than Microsoft does over Windows. Just look at the hardware. Linux is everything Windows isn't, Mac is just a similar OS with an inferior business strategy and less support.

mozilla is a far supperior product to IE that we agree upon. yes some people can get by with only linux, but I like to be able to do some of the things that are only made for a windows os. I would like to try a multi-boot, but i have heard that you need to partition your harddrive which means you lose all the information on that drive(which is really unacceptable to me at this point) which adds another point that for most people the linux installation process is too hard

I am considering getting Linux for my word processing, Internet (Internet Exploder is crap - we all know that. I am happy . . . ), e-mail, etc. Bascially everything except my games. I will keep XP partitioned for my games. I think that will work better, so long as it is not a pain in the a$s switching between the two . . .

You'll find a lot of people...including the windows world...who feel gimp and openoffice are better than their proprietary counterparts. Gimp might not be QUITE as good as photoshop, but it's nearly there, and for free vs. hundreds of dollars, it's hard to argue for the alternative. Similar for OpenOffice: I have found no way in which it's not just as easy to use as Word, without being as bloated. Many windows people and corporations use it, because it's free, completely compatible with MS Office (I've never had any issues opening word documents or powerpoint presentations) and a full-featured suite that can match MS Office.

Have you tried either lately? Both are available on all major platforms.
