It will DEFINITELY upgrade under v1.21 (100 gold to straight to Cavalry, but there is an intermediate Knight upgrade). It may be a stupid question, but do you have access to Iron? Do you still have access to Horses!?

I voted War Elephant, 'cos in the majority of my games this far I've not had access to both Horses and Iron when able to research Chivalry.

I must say I'm very surprised to see the Cossack as an alternative, while not the Mounted Warrior.

Re Hoplites: These guys were getting obsolete by Alexander the Great's day. They got beaten royally by the Macedonian cavalry and phalanxes at Chaironeia, and only played a secondary role in the conquest of Persia.

(Update: In almost all my games after posting the above, securing Iron and Horses before I got Chivalry has proved little problem. It seems I was just extremely unlucky in my first dozen-or-so games in this regard. Now I'd probably vote for the Immortal or Mounted Warrior)

I voted panzer. It seems a lot of people under rate the panzer, it is an awesome UU.

I only ever play Monarch level of difficulty and up, and am nearly always even or greater than the other civs in the tech race, but at higher levels it is quite often the way that you are neck and neck with the biggest and baddest civs in the industrial age, so any advantage is good.

When the panzer comes online, your factories are pumping, industrial age production is probably at its peak, and I am usually chaffing at the bit to expand my empire, so the panzer is a great solution. Fast and hard, blitzkrieg baby.

mounted warrior, early in the game when spearmen are the best defender it is unstoppable. as Mr Miyagi said in Karati Kid:

"if used correctly, no can defend."

Why is the mounted warrior SO good???
It needs spearmen to defend itself, so, after all, it's only slightly better than a normal swordman since it needs a slow escort. Samurai don't have that kind of problems. The only thing you need in a Mid age conquest is: attacking Samurais, defending Samurais, more Samurais, backup Samurais and Ceremonial Samurais

I think that mounted warriors are overrated. Invasions go like this: attack, counterattack, attack, counterattack. The MWs don't stand up to counterattacks well. I think that I lose less troops sending swordsmen in instead of MWs, even with their retreat ability.

Problem with swordsmen is that they move much slower. In the Ancient era you won't have too many roads, unless your industrious, or playing on a small map where every civ is close by.

On a larger map and higher difficulty horsemen are the way to go. By the time your swords arrive to the battlefield the AI will have pikemen. Horsemen are fast, and easy to upgrade. Simple, build tons of chariots then upgrade them, and later upgrade horsemen to knights and so on.

I'm sure it upgrades cause I remember converting them to Knights in one of my game. Possibly you don't have access to Iron, or if your empire does, maybe you were trying to upgrade in an unconnected city (with no Iron of its own).

I VOTE RIDER as best UU. however china is not the best civ, I like america. exp, ind, rocks. But heres my resoning, build the great library early in the game. From the moment you start building the GL go all money, never learn horseback riding, build tons of chariots, save tons of money. By the time the AI learns chivilry, or you learn it cause the learned education first, you probably have 3k+ thats at least thirty chariots you can upgrade to riders the turn you learn them! Then you mow throgh the enemy before the have even built any mid-evil armaments. You can blitz the AI on any level this way! The 3 movement allows these guys to cover great spanses of land very fast and get in on bigget cities knights can't get too right off the bat.

I'd vote for mounted warrior. Can produce them by the barrelload and they wipe anything in the ancient era so fast that the game can effectively be over very quickly.

And yes they do upgrade - have done it many time
    (expensive though)

Defensive UUs are at low rate here, hugh?!?

I mostly agree, but Cossack is too much appreciated here...

I voted for rider: 3 movement points rule at his time...

I love the War Chariot! if you get horses your unstoppable in the early game. There really fast to build and with all your stolen foriegn money you get you can upgrade them to knights! So be the egyptions, build the War Chariot, crank up the stereo and kick some serious butt!

The rider is easily the best. It is the earliest unit with an incredible movement of 3! I really needed the mobility before I got railroads. It would take many turns before I could respond to a war, but the speed advantage of the rider helps me maintain a very large empire.

The samurai would be close second. It is the best defender until the infantry because you cannot retreat from it! Also, it doesn't require horses, and this would be important on a small map with few resources.

Third place would go to the mounted warrior. The impi is great, but it goes obsolete quickly and the early GA isn't good. The Iroquios are religious and their UU won't go obsolete as quickly as the impi, so they can get an early middle ages GA. If you use horsemen to fight spearmen, a mounted warrior can fight pikemen just as easily. It will be an effective unit until musketmen are available, and maybe even longer if an AI doesn't have saltpeter!

And there you have it. The immortal is garbage because he can't retreat. You can't compare him to the mounted warrior because he doesn't even come close to being as good.

I like UUs that are two things:
    1. Truly better that its replacement in some respect
    2. Are relevant long enough to give me an advantage (GA, GL)

Panzers are relevant for just a few game turns, as scientific research/AI horsetrading progresses so quickly in the modern era that Modern Armor is just around the corner. Musketeers are similar in that riflemen and then infantry replace them very quickly.

Mounted warriors are as useless as horsemen against pikemen.

I think the samurai are incredible, since they don't require the horse resource, don't receive the penalty vs pikemen/spearmen, are coupled with a militaristic Civ, produce a GA at the perfect time, and can be upgraded to Cavalry.
