Playing as China on Viceroy, I just popped a hut in the Balkans and got a settler! Probably I can make the UHV anyway (never played China before btw), but I was considering what to do with him:

1. Slow walk back to China and risk getting eaten by a barb lion or axeman
2. Found a city with the sole purpose of keeping European contacts (and where???)
3. Walk the settler over to the Middle East to found a city that can actually connect to my trade network (and where???)
4. Try to hide somewhere until I can safely pick him up (not sure if this will even work
5. Something else??

Well, the best options are:
1) Go back to China with it
2) Hide out in Europe until you send ships around the world to get it, and possibly use it to settle the New World
3) Found a city in Siberia. You don't want to found anything in the middle east because it will either flip to Ottomans/Arabs or get conquered by Seljuks/Barbs
4) Don't found a city to keep European contacts. It would be a waste of maintenance and funds. Also there aren't that many spots that don't flip to other Euros. If you must found a city in Europe, the Balkans are best as they don't flip to anyone. However, there are lots of barbs there.

I'd recommend taking it back to China, possibly escorted by your scout (your four free barbarian victories will let the scout beat any barbs). I've managed to get mine back unescorted, though (though I play with the map revealed, so that makes it a bit easier to dodge barbs. It's still a lot of luck)

I thought there were only 3 free barb wins?

No, it's four on Monarch, and he even has six since he's playing on Viceroy.

You can found Carthage if it's not founded yet. IIRC no one flips it, and it's a pretty good site.

It might also just be Foreign, instead of Foreign Core.

Moors flip it and Egypt flips it on respawn. +Tons of barbs and the chance to get an Arab DOW.

Neither of those should happen, for historicity or balance.

It's not even Historical (Green) for Egypt.

Arab DOW will just give you more OBs and better relations with Europeans.

I know. In a recent game as France (I'm just steam rolling as them), Tunisia was Egyptian (Qartaj) and Algeria and Morocco were Moorish (Marrakech, Annaba).

So I thought since I'm playing on Viceroy, what the heck, let's found a city in Sicily so it doesn't flip per Locutus' advice.

Anyway, my Sicilian city, Tianjin, also just happened to found Taoism (annoying because I need Taoism in China for the UHV so I have to make the long walk with a missionary). Should make for an interesting game. Taoism has already spread to Athens; I'll post screenshots if anyone's interested.

It's a bit late but the best spot is probably the plain hills north of the copper in the balkans... doesn't flip to anyone and really good mix of production and commerce over time. Barbarians really aren't much to talk about on viceroy.

1 tile north of that is even better. Also doesn't flip, more production. Unfortunately not coastal, but a good city nonetheless. Quite underutilized, IMO.

Also, OP, screenshots! I'd love to see the resulting situation.

Yeah it's a lot better... it's giving me ideas!

I haven't gotten too far yet, will update later on.

You should forget UHV and try for a super unique game. Build palace in sicily, try for Chinese Roman empire or something.

Actually do you have a save form before you used the settler? Might be a neat thing, give out the save and have a thread where we all try different things with it.
