    Portugal, a small kingdom situated at the southern tip of Europe, launched the conquest of the worlds breaking physical and psychological unassailable barriers until then. In the age of closed worlds, dominated by fear and myths, but also the age of the world in movement, Portugal was in the vanguard. The Portuguese knew how to create and adapt the best boats while dominating winds and seas. They were the first to reach by sea the Coast of Africa, India, Brazil, and Japan.
    More revolutionary than the much-celebrated feats of Columbus the feat of the Portuguese was more modern and planned long-term discovery venture.
    There is narrow knowledge about this venture, although it's getting unfolded, as Archaeology evolves and find new techniques and methods, new discoveries are made. Some rare and hidden documents were found like “Esmeraldo de Situ Orbis”, written by Duarte Pacheco Pereira, a great explorer (Grande Explorador), an expert in all nautical science of Portuguese discoveries.
    At the time, there was a policy of enormous confidence concerning nautical science and discovered territories. Like a great politician, Joao II knew that in order to be successful he needed to avoid competition. Often, he recurred to counter-information and distributed false information to distract his opponents.

    The Caravela Latina (caravel of the discoveries) was the ship of discoveries. Notably, this ship could navigate almost against the wind using the "bolina" technique - a zigzag navigation method to get ahead of the wind direction.
    In Africa along the coast of the Sahara Desert to the green zone, one of the most critical navigation of that time, the winds blow always the same way, relatively easy to go south but it was almost impossible to go back because it was against the wind. Only Caravela Latina, commanded by the Great Explorer, had the ability to make this travel.
    This was a revolutionary ship to be able to explore the Atlantic, an agile vessel that achieved remarkable speeds against the wind. A very versatile and maneuverable ship could navigate in unknown waters. They could go further, carry more cargo and navigate places that other ships wouldn't dare to go.
    The Portuguese were very good at making hybrid versions of the already existing technology in Europe. For instance, they took very heavy used ships in the northern seas of Europe and joined used Mediterranean sails.
    With this approach, the Portuguese took the first step to a new type of pioneering shipbuilding, with the new scheme of sails.
    All rises at the command of Infante D. Henrique (Prince Henry) with the support of his Escola de Sagres at the tipping point of Portugal. Here he could see his ship's departure with the first big wind blow! Later, Joao II began to dominate the South Atlantic which was an entirely unknown area, before the Portuguese discoveries.

    With the great Caravela Latina, Portuguese made the exploration of the west coast of Africa. Their presence along the coast was signaled by the setting of Padrões (plural of Padrão), which are still visible today in some parts of the African continent.
    The Portuguese gradually descended along the coast, discovering something close to 300 kilometers per year. The idea was to gradually expand knowledge and eventually achieve a viable path to Asia - which was obviously the main objective.
    With Caravela Latina the cable of storms was doubled under command of Bartolomeu Dias (Grande Explorador), a remarkable achievement that no other vessel had done before.
    For thousands of years, there were two completely separate sea lanes that suddenly came together, a true whole-world Portuguese feat.
    The caravel of discovery (Caravela Latina) had completed its mission after returning to Lisbon at the end of 1488.
    The navigators have told to King (João II) about the impossibility of keeping the journey beyond the Cape of Good Hope (aka former cable of storms, since João II changed the name). They simply did not have strongest enough ships to be able to successfully navigate through the dark seas in existence at the place.

    Ten years later, Vasco da Gama (Grande Explorador) would complete the most extensive sea voyage that had been relaunched in the history of mankind.
    Portuguese arrived at India on board of another type of ship, which was named "Nau"! Vessels that had long-lasting conditions could withstand the inherent difficulties and had a large cargo capacity.
    Nau was very successful and the ship of the future. It was constantly improved and the most used vessel in Europe during the centuries 16th to 18th. The ship increased considerably in size between the end of the 15th and 17th centuries.
    The Flor do Mar is an example of this increase in size and with the longest to live (9 years). It was also preferred of Albuquerque, the last one to use this ship.
    It was equipped with round sails that generate more power than default ones.
    With this extra capacity that other ships in the 16th century did not have, it was able to make round-trip navigations to India.
    The Portuguese arrived in India in 1498 whilst the English and the Dutch almost 100 years later. The Portuguese arrival was a new milestone: for the first time, a European power stepped in Asia.
    They started commerce tradings but the main goal was to conquer the land. The career of India begun here.
    With a sea path open the commerce that until then was made by land route with many intermediaries, shortly began to be dominated by the Portuguese.
    They enhanced the Asiatic economy by shifting the trade and commercial networks to a greater scale, resizing Asiatic trade.

    With this new capabilities, Portugal acquired the monopoly of spices trade on Europe. They created Casa da India, a Commercial monopolized outpost for managing all aspects of overseas trade working like a Feitoria.
    Casa da Índia was not the first unique name of this monopoly icon.
    The first know name was Casa de Ceuta, where the Mediterranean profits were managed. Then the name changed to Casa da Guiné when they started to manage the Mediterranean and mainly new African profits. Later on, it changed to Casa da India when they added big Asiatic profits to its managing perks. This huge monopoly has changed the World Economy at the time.
    As a result of this increasing trade in Lisbon, Bairro Alto was born as a response to the social & economic transformation in Lisbon in the second half of the 15th century.
    Commercial development brings the growth in the population and construction expansion within the medieval walled city. This social phenomenon resulted in the urbanization process of the Bairro Alto district. Nowadays, in this neighborhood, the real culture of Portugal lives until now. This context also made Lisbon to miss larger key infrastructures, so Manuel I petitioned the Holy See to construct Mosteiro dos Jerónimos replacing holy site dedicated to Santa Maria de Belém and where the monks (Monge Jerónimo) would assist seafarers in transit, in a larger scale.

    When the Portuguese went to the Indic Ocean they tried whenever possible to establish agreements with the local kings. In many places, commercial negotiations had failed and they had to conquer these territories to the Muslims.
    Between Mozambique and East, the Portuguese built more than 50 sea fortresses (they were Feitorias, that outside territory had to look like fortresses, meaning that the target was to defend trade and incoming goods for Portuguese).
    Conquered at the beginning of the 16th century, Ormuz on Iran, Goa in India, and Malacca in Malaysia were key points that the military strategist Afonso de Albuquerque.
    The Portuguese were maritime warriors and their ideology was to conquer many lands, so they haven't brought the women along.
    Afonso De Albuquerque, while ruler, wanted to build a correct society and made efforts to foster marriages between natives and foreigners, even if a priest was not present. He gained the antipathy of many that only wanted to plunder and get riches.

    The Portuguese culture is still present in these cities (old City-States) nowadays.
    To make the commercial route between Goa, Malacca, China and Japan viable, Portuguese have built one of the largest ships ever. It would become known as the Nau do Trato.
    In fact, there was never any Asiatic nautic power capable of attacking and conquering one of these ships. They were so efficient and powerful that only 4 ships were lost - not in battle, but for meteorological reasons by the end of the 17th century.
    The arrival of the Portuguese to Japan was a truly revolutionary event from the point of view of Japanese history.
    For the Japanese nation, until that moment and besides Japan, they're knowledge of the world was confined to the great china and faraway India. They didn't know about the existence of other continents, namely Europe.
    Being a small country with an inferior quantity of people when compared to wider nations, the conjugation between the fortresses (Feitorias) and powerful Portuguese ships were able to have strategic dominions in a clear majority, in a vast territory as is Asia.

    Along the Portuguese history, 300 Naus shipwrecked most of them on way to home (Lisbon). Some were tragically wrecked at Lisbon's entrance after a whole year of travel.
    Every time a Nau sinks it's like sinking a fortress on water: each of them could carry something like 140 pure iron cannons.
    As a result of innovation and build strategy, Portuguese ships were very difficult to conquer. Almost impossible to defeat, a single Portuguese vessel could handle 30, 40, 50 and sometimes 100 Asian vessels, because of firepower and artillery on board.
    In the 16th century, the development of Portuguese artillery followed the evolution of the ships and was considered the best in the world. In fact, shooting speeds were 100 times faster than any other vessels, and many agree that they anticipated the technology by 200 years.
    Domination of Sea during the sixth century was ensured by three different types of vessels: The Nau, which is a cargo ship, but also well equipped for ranged attack; The galleon, which is a ship with both commercial and war profiles (Botafogo "the Spitfire" was an example of the strongest Portuguese galleon ever made, but too heavy and never gone too far from Portugal); and Caravel Redonda, which was mainly a warship.
    The latter is a Portuguese innovation that mixed two types of sails: Redonda and Latina. It had protected the armadas of India's career when the powers of the other European big players began to increase.

    There is an important part of the Renaissance for which the Portuguese voyages contributed much. By having direct interactions and knowledge of new peoples, ideas, animals, and religions, all these new diverse cultures contributed to the enlightenment and enriched our traditional knowledge about the world in all science, social and religious aspects.
    The rich information compiled through all these voyages leads to the evolution and breaking of barriers on dogmatic knowledge about the world. In the following century, Galileo shook the installed knowledge base by reviewing the solar system paradigm: from earth concentric vision to a heliocentric one.
    Without the Discoveries, works of Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo would not be possible.
    It turns out, Globalization is not a recent phenomenon, it is a phenomenon that began in the 15th century and began with the impulse of the Portuguese.
    They would be the people who would "give knowledge to the world of the world itself". The Discoveries were an important milestone, it was the beginning of a new phase of civilization in the history of mankind.

    PS: Can you please add the future versions inside a folder, I like to unzip mods directly to mods folder but I don't want to have the mods folder full of files, it's nicer when every mod is in it's folder. Thanks.

    Great job! :) I'm Portuguese and always sad because Portugal is never included in vanilla game... :nono:

    It's not working for me though, game crashes when starting new game, don't know if I did something wrong, just unzipped into mods folder... :confused:

    Also noticed the Civ icon is the Brazilian flag...

    Looking forward for updates, keep up the good work! :thumbsup:

    I have similar feelings, not really sad, but since civ 1 that I try to put Portugal in game.

    You probably did it right, still first beta version, can have some problems. If you choose Afonso it crashes? Or if is indifrent on wich you choose?

    At this moment modders are struggling with graphics, we have to use what we have, and brazilian flag with the "world", seems more likely right now ;) Also Philip II is the animated leader.

    Yeah, it only crashes if I choose Afonso, right after I click to start a new game it crashes to windows...

    Oh, ok, since it's still a beta version I thought it might have slipped by, i'm not a modder myself, so I don't really know what it takes :crazyeye: But if you could change the colors that would be nice... ( just an idea :p )

    Well, his agenda is basicaly just another excuse for him to not like us. (Like most agendas in the game)

    He basicaly likes people that are not friendly to him?!

    If I do anything to try befriending him my diplomatic view with him will surely rise. Like sending a delegation, doing a trade route or embassy and such. And according to the agenda you gave him, that will make him not like me. Therefore there is no way of becoming friends with Portugal, in any game!

    Actually the Agenda, new to Civ 6, made me choose Afonso! Because in real life he was really like that, in negotiations he never accepted gifts, he wanted them to trade with him (portugal) to receive goods or percentage of their trades or to control it totally, if not he conquered you by sea, with the powerful Naus. Also, to make peace he wanted no deals, or you make peace or you make war

    I have this inline TODO: "Afonso will hate civs that possess coastatal cities / harbor districts, and have a different religion than him, while liking civs that trades with him", wich means that even if you are other religion, if you trade (create trade routes with him) you are fine.

    But for now I used Gorgo´s Agenda (for technical reasons of modding): "Never gives up items in a peace deal, and likes civilizations who match that approach. Dislikes civilizations who have capitulated or who have never gone to war.", wich is the best approch I got for him, first part actually is for him (wich I will add in future to inline Agenda), second part I would remove.

    In my perspective this peace deal trait of Gorgo/afonso means when you trying to make a peace and you dont give up items. Happened alot with Afonso, the "muslim traders" wanted peace (they where at war because they didnt want portuguese to have a share of their trade, or even control it) , they gave gifts and such and he didnt accept any.

    So you are talking about the Gorgo´s one right?

    But I was talking about the link you posted for your final wanted results.

    that's what it says:
    "O Principe Perfeito
    Likes Civs that have a low level of Diplomatic Visibility with him.Hates Civs that are caught using spies against him."


    If you really keep it like this then Portugal is going to like people he hates (ahn?)
    Because other civs will only have low diplomatic visibility with him if he doesnt grant it to them, therefore he needs to hate / be unfriendly to this civ.

    And as soon as their relations gets better, he will no longer likes this civ.

    Nice catch, really reductive agenda (even for joao magnitude, "principe perfeito" means perfect prince), "the wanted results" are always subject to change, and I will have to check out Joao II as a whole. Albuquerque was actually my initial idea and joao II was not ;)

    Also, I didnt add Joao in this beta release and will when I review his features. So thanks once more for the tips :) Be my guest for more ;)

    I just revisited a book and i found out that joao II was an ecumenical, he accepted all idealogies and religions, he helped convert kongo to chritianism, but not by force, instead he even invited them as peers to come to lisbon. Always with trading of course but peaceful one.

    So, likes civs that like to be coverted to his religions, likes civs with other religions and to trade with them. Hates civs that city raze. Likes who send diplomats and dislikes who send spies.

    No clue way, but I got the same problem as Valentino (even after you updated to 02.1). If I choose to play as either of the Portuguese Leaders with any settings and push start the game crashes to desktop.
    I tried it with no other mods being used at the time.
    I'll wait until all the graphic problems are solved to try again cause it has probably to do with using (loaning) icons and leaderpics from other civs (but I really have no idea, cause it seemed to work fine with the Punt civ).

    It still crashed unfortunately, you also forgot to update the name of the mod folder with the new version ;)
