I've been reading about all the problems here and just thought I'd give my positive experience with the whole lets play Civ thing.

I've got a seriously old pc
    PIII 800 mhz
    528 ram
    and a v.crappy Radeon 7000
    lots of drive space.

Bought the game last thursday, and after reading the sticky about graphic cards, knew that the Radeon 7000 would not work at all !
So went and bought a Radeon 9600 pro.

Installed DirectX 9c from the install dvd (european version).
Turned off computer, fitted new Radeon 9600, installed the latest Omega drivers, sorted out my normal graphic settings.
Then installed Civ4, expecting black screens, crashes, nothing etc.

But low and behold - started up no problems !!!!! :)
Changed graphic options down to medium, screen size to 1024,
and wow I can play Civ4 without any trouble !!!!
and I mean see the Wonder movies, fights etc !

Towards the end of a game, slight slowdown between turns but nothing drastic !

Anyway that's been my positive experince which from reading here does seem to be the exception ! :goodjob:

Did you say DVD? Specs say it's a CD. Is that another surprise?

Heck, I've been playing it on a 600 Mhz Celeron, 320 megs RAM, Win2K, a 128 Mb video card. I'm in the modern age on a small map, and haven't had too much trouble with lagging. Maybe I'll try a normal sized map and see how that goes, too, although I suspect that'll be too slow.
