One thing that I was disappointed with Civilization 5 is that I was hoping that people start modding left and right and hearing more and more amazing mods that are total conversions of the whole game like Fall From Heaven 2 for Civilization 4: Beyond the Sword. However that did not happen, the forums was not populated with interesting mods that break away from the old and add in something unique, maybe it's because of a lack of a powerful engine to enforced this or that the developers are holding back on the tools to give to the modders to make something unique like this .dll that I've been hearing (correct me if I'm wrong). Now since I've heard of a yet another expansion is coming out for this game, I'm hoping that we have yet another golden age for modding, because without any decent mods, I don't think i'll be purchasing this expansion pack.

Guys, is there anything like Thomas Mod for Civ? V I am yet to see something like that ever again... it was like a new EP for IV. It was brilliant.

Civ5 modding tools are good. Not perfect, but good enough to make total conversion, even before the release of the source code. See my WWII mod for one.

But a lot of civ4 modders didn't liked the game rules of civ5 when it was released, to the point that they never get the motivation to convert their mods.

G+K made the game better, BNW seems to be even better, so, who knows, maybe some will change their mind...

There are thing holding back Civ V modding which I don't hold out hope for BnW fixing. The locked-down .gr2 format turns adding new 3d models into a byzantine process only a handful of people even here have managed to master. The impossibility to add rather than replace music means most mods adding a new civ need to cut a corner by switching out an existing civ. The fact that mods can't be used in multiplayer drastically reduces their potential popularity.
I would really love it if BnW would create the incentive for Firaxis to address one or more of these issues, but I don't dare hope it will happen.

Hey, I feel so very very hurt...

I know that Civ5 modding is more restricted, specially in the Art and Sound department, but there are some amazing mods out there...

Of course BNW might fix some of the biggest issues... It's something we can only hope...

Do you mean Thomas' War by tsentom1? That really was one of the best Civ IV mods and I haven't seen anything similar released for Civ V yet. However, tsentom1 actually still mods and has been modding for Civ V so maybe he'll make a Thomas' War 2 for Civ V at some point in the future.

Bu yeah, Civ V modding is more restrictive and lacks MP support which makes it less desirable to mod makers.

Yeah, that was it! Good to know! I know that mod was the mod that brought me to civfanatics (back in 2008... man, look for how long I've been here!), I didn't even remember the name of it and its creator, I have to look him up and give him my regards!

Modding to me is more difficult than CiIV. It could just me, I have so much more to learn. With CiIV I could do so much more than I can with V.

I have plenty of good ideas, but I can't add icons and change civs. Making maps seems to be my forte. I love geography, so I will keep trying. With BNW it is going to be fun putting some scenarios together, and that I certainly look forward to it. One I was thinking of is a Zulu Wars scenario. If anyone wants to learn there are some great modders here. All of them have been very patient and helpful to me. I will also help you with what I know.

sorry if I didn't see your mods if you did made anything, i'm the guy who like to take a look at the biggest mods out there like Fall From Heaven 2, Caveman2Cosmos, Rise of Mankind, Planetfall, those types of big mods. That is what I am expecting for Civ 5 and that is what I think causes the golden age of modding, is that everyone is trying to make big mods for the game and if other people hear about it that has not played civ 4, they will buy the game (probably more then once), which help increase the sales of the game and people playing the mods as well.

Sadly I don't see that in Civ 5 and that's why it's all so quiet, I only hear more news about other things then Civ 5 modding community and other stuff...

CivV modding is months, if not years, away from reaching the same level of CivIV modding. Many reasons for this which I'm sure the actual modders understand better than I do. Beyond the Sword shipped with great community mods like Fall from Heaven, Next War, RFC, etc. The fact that BNW will not do this should be an indicator of the current status of the modding community.

There is good stuff coming out in CivV modding, very high-quality, but the overall scene is inferior to CivIV's.

Btw its quite possible that they change something with the golden ages. They have removed gold from rivers and coast. Its possible that Golden Age now gives some kind of trade route bonus.

That had absolutely nothing to do with anything.

The big barriers to my mind are the impenetrable nature of adding 3D models, limitations on adding animations for new attack types, and the complete impossibility of adding sounds.

That's the opposite for me, but I understand the point, the first steps in civ5 modding are harder than civ4, it could be discouraging.

for 3D models, thanks to deliverator's work based on lemmy's tool released in 2010, there is good hope that buildings and leaders could be added to the list of already possible models (units/improvements)

I don't know if needing to download 5 different programs, the majority of which are old, no longer available, and even then requiring an outdated version, just to import export assets would be considered good.

I REALLY hope firaxis releases an official asset import/export tool/plugin for a variety of programs.

Would make modding so much easier.

Indeed. I'm not convinced there are as many as five people here who can take a blender or 3dsmax model and successfully get through all the steps needed to make it work in-game. A single official conversion tool for that is sorely lacking.

I think you've done something wrong with your installation here. Exporting assets worked out of the box for me, and is still working.

Or you're talking about making new units ?

Sure, it would be much better, much easier.

But that's not the reason behind the difference between civ4 modding and civ5 modding, for example you couldn't create new units or new leaderheads at the beginning for civ4, it has required different users-made tools to make it possible.

Don't you have to get your models and animations into out-of-date versions of a particular format or something?
