Does anyone know of a mod or some option I can select that would let me play as the civ i grant independence to? I've looked and looked but can't find any like this. Thanks for any help in advance.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "grant independence" to in terms of the base game.

The only mod I know of that allows you to change your civ in mid-game is RFC. May not mean that there are not others. I would pose your question over on the mods forum (C&C).

I think he is wanting to play as a Civ he creates via creating a colony rather than playing as his original Civ.

ah yes, of course...I do that so rarely that i forgot

Yep, The7Sins is right. Sorry for not clarifying it more. After settling overseas colonies I'd like to be able to grant them independence, at which point a new civ would enter the game, and then have the choice to keep playing as my original civ or let the AI take control of them and I start playing as the newly liberated civ.

I think saving it as a worldbuilder after you grant independence and then starting a "new" game, choosing your worldbuilder save in the scenarios, and then playing as your colony would work... but I've never actually tried it, so I couldn't say for sure.

I don't think you can do that in Civ IV. You can build a palace on a new continent then grant independence to the cities on the original continent, but you would still be the original civilization.

I want to try this some time as Portugal with a Terra map, but I don't have the patience to wait that long to create my new homeland.

This sounds like it will do exactly what I'm hoping it will and it seems like it should work. I'll give it a try, thanks for the help.

I think Legends of Revolution has something like this, I've never tried it, but if you grant a rebellious city independence, you can play as the new civ.

If you originally started it as a hotseat game with just 1 human, there might be some way to spawn the colony as a human and then retire the original civ. Can't find anything obvious but there might be a console command.

The worldbuilder/scenario thing seems just as easy anyway.

I gave the worldbuilder save method a try and it works just fine except for one problem I was hoping someone might be able to help with. The problem is that since I take control of the new civ by basically starting a new game all the great people points get reset for every civ. I hope there is some way to carry on the game as a different civ without giving all the civs that have been around since the ancient era a fresh start on great people points.

Sadly going the Worldbuilder route will always reset the GP points for everyone.

OK, this seems to work:

1. Start the game through the multiplayer/LAN menu, with just yourself plus AIs.
2. Play as normal till you spawn the colony.
3. Save the game.
4. Exit to the multiplayer menu and load that saved game.
5. Choose to play as the colony civ instead of the original one (this may require the "take over AI" option to be checked when starting the game, not sure).
6. When it says "we are waiting for cjb64 to connect", vote to continue without that player (your old civ will be taken over by an AI).
7. Proceed.

GP points apear to be retained OK. I don't know what other implications there might be from starting it through the multiplayer menu though.

On reflection this might even be an entertaining way of spicing up a normal game - I'm going to try it :hmm:

Edit: Best to change the leader name, either of the old civ before saving, or the new one after reload, otherwise there are two "cjb64"s in the game, which is confusing! Just pull up the main menu and "Your Details" during play.

Any revolution mod does that (i.e., RevolutionDCM, IndieRevolutions, Community Civ V, Quot Capita, C2C, Legends of Revolution).

Yeah, it also resets past diplomatic events (leaving the only diplomatic modifiers to be religion, war, and civics), and it resets production in every city in the game, AND it resets every unit in the game, which is quite frustrating, as if you start again as a civ with a large amount of units, you have to give ALL of them new orders...
