My power is not currently out, but a wire in the bottom of my refridgerator burned through it's wiring, so I saw fit to unplug the appliance until I can call a repairman in the morning. My question for those of you who have suffered through extended power outages is this: so long as the door isn't opened at all, how long should the food in there stay good?

Well, most of the stuff was fine after the 30-hour blackout in August. Especially since the meats were usually frozen solid, the cold cuts were thrown out.

If all else fails, you can always buy ice....

Lucky for me my only food in there right now is some fruit, butter and cheese. It's my roommates' food that would be at any risk, and I'll risk their food before a fire anyday.

My power was out for about 14 hours. I didnt take the chance, I threw everything out. Ive had food poisoning before, I never want to go through that again.

I suppose I could plug it back in and just check in once in a while with the fire extinguisher handy. I could just leave it unplugged when I go to bed.

You could also put the more critical stuff like butter near the heat exchanger (or what it's called) or into the icebox (if present).

You should better eat the tasty fruit to avoid any danger for your room-mate.:D;)

Superslug, you may never get this oppurtunity ever agian, I want you to take full advantage of it....

you now have the once-in-a-lifetime excuse to eat all of the fridge's contents and suffer no moral or social jibes, do it superslug

EAT IT

EAT IT ALL!!!

...and if the food is not of refined taste, you could eventually ask the hot chick next door (or some blocks farther, whatever....) to store it for a while!:groucho:

Perfection, theoretically speaking, it's very tempting. In reality however, you have no idea what kind of groceries they buy. :vomit:

I tried plugging it back in and a flame lit up off the wire less than a minute later. It's staying unplugged.

Another great idea if I lived on a different street. The only 'chick' around is an unemployed excon who doesn't shave her legs and has two kids... :(

:(
Oh well, I guess it would indeed seem strange if you'd go to a rather 'distant' neighbour and say:
"Hi, erm, I am Slug... Super-Slug to be more precise... see, I live a 20 minutes taxi ride away and my fridge burns... can I store my roommate's banana?"

You're on the other side of the ocean-how did you know we have bananas in the fridge?

You got me!
I'm that unshaved excon and sabotaged your fridge in order to arrange a date...

Besides, I'm about to suspect that bananas grow in fridges (read: my roommate stores them quite frequently)

That depends on how fast they're eaten, Perfection. I tend to buy a lot of them when they're on sale. Keeping them in a fridge does turn the peels black quicker, but the good stuff inside takes a lot longer to rot.

Lucky for me, it's been unplugged maybe 12 hours and the landlady is already making arrangements to have a new appliance installed today. With luck, the grocery loss will be as minimal as the harassment.
