Pre-DaftNES4: Born of Stardust

Almost ready with update 0, most definately ready tommorrow...

To be honest I have quite a few issues and concerns about how this has turned out. Its too close to a fresh start NES, but in space. A certain space opera element is missing, and even putting together the update 0 is quite awkward. We have just too many references to humanity and the USA in particular. And TV sci-fi. I feel there's just so much more epicness to squeeze out of the idea of sentient races evolving in space. Sorry if that sounds arrogant or ungrateful, but its how I see it.

And I failed to advertise properly. I really meant it when I said races should be your reason for playing, and not just an excuse to get your name down. For example, while I didn't put a whole load of planning into my Satellian race for SLYNES, it did build on various ideas I had for years (many years), and it became a really fun tool of expression while I was playing - like roleplaying a character. I really like imagining alien races and there are certain others here that do too. But obviously not everyone is the same.

So, if this goes to a 'proper' NES, I think there should be a small number of pre-set races that I am really happy with, perhaps like different cradles, with players then able to build their own factions from those races, without worring about creating a whole workable alien race from scratch. At the risk of sounding eliteist, when it comes to building races I am more on the same wavelength as North King, Lord_Iggy and Dis, and perhaps there could some communal effort there. And others could suggest ideas without having to build entire races and their histories.

As for this thread, we will at least have an update 0 here and see how things go. /rant.

For the Choon being natural pilots- does that imply natural astronauts? Also, I picture our space travel of basically being a Choon who's attached a few simple drives to itself and sealed vulnerable portions of its body inside solid shells.

@Iggy I meant to ask about that, for now I have given you a basic explorer ship but it is an actual artifical vessel. Could a Choon survive in vaccum and attach an FTL drive to itself? I am not sure how to represent that in the rules!

My idea has been there for a while (In some form since Spore was announced years back), but I actually considered using another race for the actual thread, since I have some ideas. Will you be able to privately submit for approval, or will the races be preset?

I prefer the exploration/description/setting element before 'gaming to win'. Is that what you're getting at?

Hmm I'm just being arrogant and its no surprise that other people don't conform to this eccentric idea that I had. And this is a pre-NES to test rules and I did say leave your favourite race ideas to the proper thread, didnt I? I will now sleep.

I will admit that my base idea for my pre-NES race was the very blah/plain/bad "cyborg gorillas" with no more than a half hour of elaboration + slightly more background added later, because I was under the impression that this was a pre-NES. A quick test with minimal background if any, and that when the test was finished and lessons learned and acted upon, that when the actual NES started out, I'd actually post a race that be much better, and worthy of a DaftNES, as I do actually have an idea in mind for an original non-humanoid race (based on a Spore species I played), which, although I haven't fleshed it out yet (at all), I'd be more than willing to replace the Gornnix if given time (of a couple days) to do so.:)

No you are right Matt, I was up myself last night, and this is a pre-NES after all.

But I really really like my race. :(

I like them too!

OK if I haven't already alienated (heh) or bored everyone...

UPDATE 0:

Around the small red star of Mal, the spider-like eight-limbed race known as the Darth enter a new era. The war that created the True Darth Empire of the Entha has already faded into memory. Two FTL-capable ships are now prepared to take the empire to the stars, the small size of the vessels giving little hint of the massive industrial and technical effort that went into creating them. But the space industries, mostly belonging to the Serene Trading Republic of the Canmor, have now gained in power; while they remain as tributaries, they have dared to distance themselves from the direct rule of the Empire.

The Gornnix can claim to have been travelling in space for over a thousand years. The recent discovery of FTL drive has led to the colonisation of the nearby star system MD2 as an industrial outpost. This has also led to a renewed wave of inter-faction fighting. The smaller Gornnix explorer craft have now all been destroyed, or never returned from trips to other stars. Acoh Tiberahlp Grodd is left with his powerful warships, but an alliance of rival factions has set up an outpost in orbit of the giant planet Morr, and has acquired a warship of its own, perhaps soon to mount a challenge for Grodd itself. Meanwhile the nearest star of all, Mal, still remains unexplored, marked in Gornnix legends as a source of misfortune.

Around the star called Origin, a strangeness stirs that might not be recognised as life to outsiders. Giant, seemingly inorganic forms awake from slumber beneath a thick chemical sky. After an uncharacteristic flash of inspiration, the concept of a faster-than-light engine has begun to ripple across the mind-space of the Twenty Individualists, spawning greater ripples of excitement among their descendents, thirsting for greater knowledge of the nearby stars.

The Rimtreader Coalition of Poleis continues to hold sway over the remnants of the Fa-Va. Two Za-Ro explorer craft are made ready to explore new stars, seeking new outposts to guarantee the survival of the species against any future Mindwar, urgency heightened by hints of a new and insidious mind-virus lurking in remote habitats of the home system.

It has been a generation since the Adenari first ventured to the two dim red stars, the components of the trinary star system that is centred on the great star of Elhadros itself. With the scrapping of their earlier exploration vessels and the commissioning of the Sendas cruisers, it seems clear that House Cadrol intends to expand deeper into space, while maintaining its grip on power back home. The political intrigue of Elhadros is already spreading to the colonies, but House Cadrol has a major advantage while it maintains a monopoly on FTL-capable craft.

In the star system known to its inhabitants as Redoubt, Legion continues much as it has done for countless centuries, content to venture no further into space than is necessary to exploit the system's metal-rich asteroids and moonlets. Giant weapons platforms defend the system from whatever lurks beyond. However, without warning, a comparatively-eccentric branch of Zh scientist-philosophers submit elegant designs for a FTL drive to the collective. It remains to be seen what impact this will have, if any, on the groupthink of the Zh. Meanwhile, a test of new scanning equipment reveals strange anomalies on the ocean floor of the Zh homeworld*.

Having overseen the colonisation of the Beta system, the Za-Rak ship Discovery Mk1 awaits further orders. The initial excitement of FTL travel is already fading among the Za-Rak, and One Central Government may hope for fresh discoveries to enthuse the populace of planet Cogito's underwater metropoli.

The Solar Federation is hardly unique in struggling with environmental and social issues. For now the Mir Explorer programme succeeds in diverting the attention of humanity, as Earth's media focuses on preparations for the first interstellar voyage.

The Alliance of Hanocked is in a similar position, as feuding Onids put their differences on hold to watch the launch of the Klaxamer Exploratory Vessel.

Shock and excitement grip the Lenitean Republic. The first FTL voyage of the first Commissioner Kotore class vessel is naturally to the nearby binary sibling star, Lolixoa II, a short hop in galactic terms. Even their nearest neighbour teems with life; although not equipped for exploration, the vessel returns with images of exotic alien vistas, of large trees tended by masses of scurrying creatures. Giant industrial hives are the only interruption to a uniform canopy of trees. Launches of simple spacecraft are also observed, and it seems these aliens have begun exploiting asteroids and other small bodies in their home system. The stealthy Lenitean ship returns without being detected or making contact, leaving the entwined races calling themselves the Lauki and Mous to carry on unawares for now.

The Dorlean Federation celebrates the launch of its V1 Scout vessel. By now it is clear to Dorlean scientists that their species is not biologically related to other species on the planet. Almost forgotten during the turmoil of the past, the ancient legend of the Alva hints at a rather more exotic origin, and adds further weight to the idea of interstellar exploration.

Lonely Peace Walker faces two issues. Observations confirm that the giant star OG3 is approaching the end of its days, with massive coronal ejections already causing problems with the electronics of the home planet. Meanwhile Peace Walker's countless millions of drone offspring seem to be forming a collective consciousness of their own, a faint echo that dares to stand alone from the central mind.

Despite limited resources, the Kaavap Preservation Initiative has struggled on for generations, finally perfecting the technology that could heal the polluted wastes of the Yhuj homeworld. But for now at least, the Nahuja tribes inhabiting the ruins of the old industrial cities seem uninterested in Kaavap's plans.

The Socialist Democracy of Klin celebrates the launch of its first FTL-capable vessel, the Skrin. Klin astronomers expect to find habitable planets in nearby star systems, but some doubt if their 'total democracy' can be safely exported beyond the home star, K4.

A distinguished Choon known as the Dancer of the Teal Horizon causes a stir among the home-worlds of Took. The mysterious new age of technology becomes only more so, as it seems only Dancer has learnt the secrets of interstellar travel and assembled the FTL-frame named Vessel One.

The Journal of Othridas Vokedal, Consulate-Major of the Great House Confederation, House Cadrol: Year 50 of the Third Cycle, Subcycle 1, Day 13

When I was elected Consulate-Major, we stood on the precipice of true glory. That day, I took an oath to lead us to that glory. Gods, have I not done well in pursuing this oath? No! No... The other "great", Houses, staid in their complacency would rather toy in the matters of bureaucracy than to pursue that which is true greatness, true glory. Cadrolia has always been a land of innovators, of progress. And now we must stoop to the level of equals to these lesser realms, lesser Houses, to stroke them as one strokes a child or a pet while we go about the business of men! It is at the beginning of this fiftieth year of the glorious ascendant Third Cycle that I stand upon the precipice of a new goal; that of ridding Cadrolia and the Adenari of the burden which is the other Houses and the pithy "nations", they represent in mockery of government.

I write from a Sendas Cruiser in orbit over Ordros. From here I can see both Elsaan and Ordros. Elsaan, though obscured by clouds of fog, is glorious. Even beneath the fog, I can see the great dots of light in the murk. One of these is Feddoth; surely it must be the brightest. Capital of Cadrolia, center of order and learning. What learning there can be, in any case. House Nonveth, gods curse their name, prostitutes itself before the people. With their "programs", and their "initiatives", they waste valuable money and resources. For what? To please the common man. What is the common man? Nothing more than a pile of flesh, with no thought, no drive. He is good for nothing but labor, and labor he shall. But Nonvethica, and its House, they are too noble for the harsh realities of this universe. No, they would spend money, time, patricians on these Adenari who are truly no better than animals. I rant, but this journal is but an outlet. Hopefully I can continue on to matters of greater consequence...

A new day is dawning, not just across Cadrolia, but across the entirety of Elsaan, across all of the Adenari. I have plans; great ones. I shall not, nay, cannot go into greater detail. Suffice it to say that the heavens themselves shall tremble before the might of Cadrol; and if that might is in the name of the Confederation? So be it. I shall not stand before the gods and ask for more than I am yet worthy of. The people on Ordros, on the Dawn Ascendant (I forget to mention, that being the moniker of this particular vessel), they know the true value of work, value of the commoner. As any school-child knows, Ordros is divided into national and corporate sections, dominated by large boring (that is to say that the mines are bored into the surface of the planet) mines. The people here, if it is possible, are a lower class than that of a odekail ((mine or farm-laborer)). To be specific, they are convicts, often psychotics. Cadrol, among other more sensible Houses use them as labor, and will sell them off to different companies to work privatized mines. I shall meet the High Commissioner of the Cadrolic Operations in several hours... I look forward to working with him. I'm assured he is quite punctual and efficient; these qualities even a Nonvethic can appreciate.

While I'm here I might as well illuminate for my own enjoyment just how efficient our forces on the Dawn Ascendant are. Any Cadrolian ought to be proud; we have a cadre of several hundred marines here, equipped with the best in land-military technology... The High Guard in Feddoth is nothing compared to these men. Regardless, most of them are odekail, not great conversation by any means. The officers are often low-patrician, however, and I've acquired some decent knowledge of what they employ in the marine corps in recent times. Intriguing...

I shall retire for now... Perhaps I will mark more on these matters later.

Othridas Vokedal

Nice update, but the the little mite ship is my one? Its a silly shape and looks like poop! :D.

This was something more like what I was envisioning:

There being various crystalline bits loosely bound in, fore-aft asymmetry, and the suggestion of a magnetic-plasma sail (the rainbow haze).

More like one of Chihuly's Chandeliers:
Spoiler :

but with wider seperation between the componets, and the full spectrum glow of a plasma sail. I'll make a 3D model when I'm done updating with my NES.

In the meantime here is the barest snippet of a story:

“The most dangerous number of caterpillars to come across? Oh that's an easy answer - one!”
“Okay makes sense...wait what?”
“Well lad you know its worst to face a team of humans; they've got each other backs and a plan, one guy on his own gets shot in the back and a mob gets stupid”
“Yeah?”
“Now your basic FaVa, he ain't stupid despite the drooling, but his brain doesn't work like a Humans, or a Adenari, or a Redclaw or all that. He thinks slooooow. You come over, ask a question and it'll be ten seconds or so before he'll even notice you're there – fun times for a bar prank let me tell you!”
“So why does that mean its more dangerous on its own, surely a whole short bus of them is still more scary than one low watt bulb alone?”
“Funny guy huh? Well, if there is a bunch of them, whenever they see a guy make a move they have to spend ten long seconds standing there like a muppet working out if its friend or foe, which is when you hit them with the grenade launcher. But if your up against one who absolutely knows that he's on his own, and Every. Single. Thing. that pops up is a target...well then he'll just take his concious mind out of the loop and let the stembrains controlling his guns make the shots autonomously...”
“Scary huh?”
“When you can wield seven rifles independently scary doesn't even begin to cover it. I saw one take out a whole squad of Redclaw at five hundred metres back on Swan in a couple of heartbeats. Took out the damn birds flying behind them too...”

Regarding Disenfranchised's story, are the majority of "nations", in the galaxy in contact?

@kentharu of course I've been working in dribs and drabs all this time, I just haven't finished it what with various concerns. I start before I get all the orders in and finish when I finish.

@Lord of Elves: I dunno, that idle bit of characterisation could be a message from the future!

I shall interpret it as such (ooooh, the FUTURE). Although, it would be useful to know if I can or can't perform diplomacy yet.

Great stories guys :D

-> About diplomacy, no races are actually in communication with each other at this point. But the Lenitean Republic has the means to talk to the Lauki-Mous if it wants to.

-> About orders, I guess there are going to be a lot of turns before much happening. So what I suggest is two turns of game time for each update. So perhaps you would like to send some generic long-term orders at this point...

When are orders due?

I don't want to set a deadline just yet, I fear some confusion. But to use an example, we'll take the Darth situation.

You start with a treasury of 20 Eco, but if you spend all this be aware you are actually only making 8 Eco per turn at this point.

It would cost you roughly 8 Eco (8 Pop, times Culture if Culture >1) to raise your Culture, which may or may not affect your Eco income, but would have other subtle benefits.

It would cost you 15 Eco to increase your Tech level, which would increase your Eco income by at least 1, and have other benefits depending on what tech area you chose. However, you can only safely spend 8 Eco on science per turn (pop/ind/tec limits listed beneath your Eco) before you risk some random investment drop-out, so you might want to make a part investment.

You could build another Imperial Explorer for 11 Eco, however, with an industry limit of only 8 at present, you also risk some wastage if you try to build this in one turn. You could 'overspend', earmarking some extra Eco to make up any losses (you will get unused Eco back). But Ships can be build over several turns no problem.

You could build armies or space defences, in preparation for hostile contacts of to keep your own people in line (10 Eco each), or you could build more Freighters already in anticipation of having an expanding interstellar economy (5 Eco each). But the Industry limit issue applies to how much you cumulatively spend on all this stuff too, per turn, including your ships.

You could build another colonist for 15 Eco, but at present you have 3 stacked up. If you are low on colonists, you will get a certain number of free ones over time, but at a random and probably slow rate.

Colonists could be sent to the unsettled Aqua Bio (ocean) zone in your home system, for free, and you would get extra income for choosing to have a city there. But due to the unsuitability (2 stars for a Darth) there is less than 50% chance of success for each colonist. So you may want to send two colonists in one turn, or wait for your scouts to find better zones at other stars. But then there will be a distance cost of 10 Eco times the distance (the number of little dots on the map) from your nearest settlement - you only need to pay the distance cost once per turn, per star, regardless of how many settlers are sent, but it won't go away until you have some kind of base in that system. If that makes sense. So you might want to keep hold of some Eco for long-distance colonising later.

With your FTL speed of 1, your ships will take two turns to reach most of the nearby stars. And then they have to return home before you get any info. So that's actually four turns before you know what's out there. But if you sacrifice a Fuel Cell, you could reach any of those stars in one turn. Since you start with two fuel cells, a ship could be loaded with the other one for a return trip the turn after.

Hope that helps a bit

Nice update, but the the little mite ship is my one? Its a silly shape and looks like poop! :D.

This was something more like what I was envisioning:

There being various crystalline bits loosely bound in, fore-aft asymmetry, and the suggestion of a magnetic-plasma sail (the rainbow haze).

More like one of Chihuly's Chandeliers:
Spoiler :

but with wider seperation between the componets, and the full spectrum glow of a plasma sail. I'll make a 3D model when I'm done updating with my NES.

@Dis I have re-envisioned that sprite as I had problems with the edges and scale, I hope this is OK. Hopefully it will show on the map and ship details now.

@Daft, yes please a wait on the deadline. I'm still making sure I understand the rules 100%.

That helped. Thanks!

Although in the update 0, you mentioned I had two FTL-capable ships. Those that mean I have two ships to use, or was that for story?

I'm putting together my story. For now, I'd like to announce that I'll be leaving for Hawaii on Thursday, so Wed will be my last day available more than twice a week. IDK how long this Pre will go for, but if it'll end before the end of August, you can just get rid of my race. If not, Daft, how should I sort things out while I'm gone?
