It finally happened.

14 AI Large Fractal (turned out to be Pangea).
Monarch Level
Aggressive AI

An AI nuked my capital. Don't know why this war got started. Everyone is at war with each other. Me and my 2 vassals and my other ally who is himself a superpower versus 2 other superpowers and their allies. Its a world war in the modern age. So right now there is a Space Race going on and it is CLOSE. As well as a global war. I don't know how I'll win it.

So has anyone experienced a pre-emptive nuclear strike by the AI.

Also, feel free to talk about any interesting games you have going on or have experienced.

EDIT: For anyone new reading this, I had NO Nukes yet in my possesion.

I've seen the AI nuke the hell out of another AI before I'd built my first nuke, so it's definately a myth that the AI needs a human to use them first.

Yep, see my posts here:

Incidentally, this was the same game. I got myself elected to the UN and managed to repeal the non-proliferation treaty. Sadly, my subsequent nuking of Louis lost me the next election (even though he started it, not sure if you should cop a diplomatic hit for launching a counter-attack, although it was a rather large counter-attack, ;) ). Alas, the treaty got re-installed. I'd stockpiled in the interim though.

When you were pre-emptively nuked, did you not have nukes yet yourself? I'm curious.

I did have nukes myself that I had built before the first non-proliferation treaty came in to effect, but I hadn't used any of them. As far as I am aware, Alexander was the first person in the game to actually launch a nuke, although I knew that he had it sitting there in his capital for quite a while.

I'm curious... How do you know that AI nuked another AI? Is there any message?

Montezuma nuked me (Russia) and Mana Musa once (Mali) he had 3 uranium too.

(first post....woot)

I have tried to nuke a city after the game had ended (time over...wait, just one more turn thing), but it wouldn't let me...don't know why, but that kinda sucked....

I have yet to nuke, but late in one game, there was a war going on (on a different continent...I stayed out of it...every so often my speakers would make a sound like a lot of feedback....is this the sound of nukes going off?

I had no nukes. None at all, I wasn't even building any because I was too busy trying to catch up on the Space Race. I am some 4 pieces behind. But with my superior industry (note: better tile management than the AI :P) I should be able to win it. But there is a World War between 12AI plus me (My Allies: 1 Superpower, 2 Vassals/////Enemies: 2 Superpowers and their 3 Vassals), so its getting tough :(

One time, my speakers made a HUGE and by huge I mean extremely loud static noise when monty launched a nuke, I got so scared.

that is the sound i am talking about....i about pissed myself...didn't see the nuke at all, just heard the sound that made me piss myself...

No this is a bug in the modern age. Check in the bug reports forum for an easy fix.

It appeared the AI almost never used or build nukes in Vanila, but it does in Warlords.

Yeah the loud noise thing is an acknowledged bug, it has something to do with a specific modern era naval unit I think, can't remember which one. There's a fix around for it somewhere on the forums if it's annoying you.

When a nuke gets dropped, the screen shakes. That's how you know. It's easy to miss though, (well, unless you also happen to be in the right location to see the mushroom cloud that is).

By the way, a neat trick if you don't know it:

When you launch multiple nukes, if you launch them all together instead of one at a time (by using the shift key to select several of them before you hit the red button), the mushroom cloud gets bigger, the more nukes the bigger the explosion. It doesn't appear to actually do any more damage than launching all of them individually but I haven't thoroughly tested this. The area of effect is definately the same (even though the cloud can cover a whole continent), but I'm not sure whether it improves your odds against SDI and bomb shelters or not.

cool, thanks....will try that tonight...

getting ready to launch my first nukes as well...attacked the romans, started gaining ground, then they offered peace, and I thought I had my coal (which is why I attacked them) and accepted...didn't have coal...now I just gave them 10 rounds to recover and possibly get tanks...should have at least got them to capitulate....

but anyway....lol

It tells you in the event log whenever somebody launches a nuke, and wether it explodes or not.

Ive seen a text announcement that one civ shot down a nuke with sdi that was launched from another civ. Very cool.

I though that only applied to nukes launched at you, not between AI players?

I could be wrong.

Just started cooking the romans...I love the nuke graphics...mad it doesn't kill all the defenders in the town though....
