I'm thinking of maybe making another set of borders.

This preview may look repetative because I have only done one head on a post. I'll mix it up with eight different warnings. I will be a little more creative in the hills as they don't show up at sea, but for the flat terrain (including the sea) I will stick to things mounted on posts.

I would like ideas/suggestions.

edit: and now some flags and towers added

Here I've added some vertical flags or banners, to some new rock walls.

I think it looks a bit random/unclear.

What if you'd use more defined (actual) border, and add a couple of this kind of "warning signs" in only some of the border graphic tiles?
I think that way the borders would be clear, with some unique features scattered.

Actually, one of the things I'm trying to get away from is the coloured solid fake borders. I'm aiming to get something that looks like it is part of the terrain that still marks the territory. I will probably put some stone towers in the hills and mountains.

Do you think a body on a stake (for one of the posts) would be too much.

I've been thinking about your question for a request...and when thinking about what would be logical, I came to one conclusion, to be honest. I think what I came up with could be very useful for modern scenarios and mods. Basically, what is always on a border between differing nations? Border controls and customs! What I'd love to see is some borders with customs booths dispersed around every so often. I mean, prior to the establishment of the EU in its current form, these things were all over Europe. They remain in most of Eastern Europe as well as the borders between all non-EU nations around the world, so this kind of seems like the most logical idea, in my opinion. I could ellaborate a bit more if you're interested.

For this current set your doing, I would opt for wooden palisade walls rather than stone ones. They don't fit with the tribal look of the skulls. Scrap the flags as well (at least for this set), they don't seem to blend nicely with the skulls on stakes. You mentioned also adding some body on stakes as well. I like that idea, and in no way is that "too much". I mean, we see little civ units dying all the time, seeing one piked on a stake wouldn't be that much worse.

I'd also slightly resize the skulls to be smaller, since they kind of look overpowering compared to the stake. And maybe make a few different variations on them, for instance, some tilted downwards, some stabbed farther down the stake, etc. That would greatly modify this set, I think.

It might be. Probably best to ask Plotinus or another mod, or perhaps include a disclaimer of some sort. Personally I like the skulls, it's like the borders of an orc/goblin/troll or perhaps a cannibalistic peoples lands. Maybe make the standards that are with the skulls slightly different.

Maybe a vertical flag hanging below the skull, would cover most of the post.

Edit: And maybe some posts with a vertical flag and no skull. I will check into adding the wooden outposts to replace the stone towers.

I did consider border crossings, but they could only appear in the hills, as you don't want them out in the water, it is a bit of a challenge.

I think that the thing distracts me the most, is that they (poles & posts) are tall and thin - they become more or less invisible (to my eyes atleast).
What if those poles were half the height they are now?

I like the idea of putting towers on hills and/or mountains, but I agree with aaglo that it would be easier to see the actual borders when better defined. E.g. you could use the standard borders - or something similar - and add towers. Or walls? That would be great for e.g. a Chinese scenario.
