Quetzalcuatal was the flying snake god, but I already have him lined up for the Quetzal Archer to replace the Longbowman.

Nice call for the name and good looking unit

I´m new. So excuse me.

About re-writing history, alternative lines & what if. Only a little suggestion, could utahjazz7 or someone paste the jaguar/or the jaguar head on agloo´s nice dwarf organ –if agloo allow- in order to have a alternative gunpower evolution whithout European way?

Ah, BTW, I love so much your units: utahjazz7, kal-el, Bebro,Dom Pedro & aaglo

Yours,

Thanks, Olixas.

Also, ozy, as for the idea of the snake-shaped barrel for the gun... :goodjob:. VERY creative. I assume utah won't want to make a change like that this late in the game, but it's alright. At civ-scale, I'm sure it wouldn't come out very distinctly.

Also, Kal-El, Quetzalcoatl was the main god of the Aztecs. I mean, he literally trickles down into every aspect of society, so to have a gun bearing his likeness wouldn't be unusual (in a world where the Aztecs had gunpowder of course, otherwise it'd be VERY unusual).

And I should note, Quetzal-coatl basically breaks down to "feathered serpent" or "bird serpent" so by calling the Quetzal Longbowman that, it's really not attaching it to that God but is rather simply saying that it is a unit with feathers.

Nahuatl (Aztec) word for fire is "tletl", as a prefix it seems to be variously "tle..." or "itl..."
Nahuatl spearthrower is "atlatl"

So, perhaps "Itlatl Guardsman" or "Tlelatl Guardsman"

Since an early gunpowder unit's role might be so different from what the Jaguar Warrior's would be (jumping in as an elite shock troop), perhaps the jaguar uniform might have a different colour with the musketman? I've seen illustrations of warriors with the jaguar rosettes but in green or blue bodysuits. This might distinguish the unit somewhat.

Perhaps knee/elbow length body suits (so as not to be graphically overwhelming) that are civ-coloured and peppered with the black jaguar rosettes.

Just a suggestion.

Also, somewhat OT,

Kal-El, I'd like to suggest that your illustrations for the various longbowmen feature lengthier bows. A longbow in most cultures to which I'm familiar is generally given to exceed the height of the bowman. This separates their tactical use from that of other archers.

If I may... the Aztec word for "fire arrow" is Tlemitl. In the FUP checklist, I have a possible siege weapon for the Aztecs listed as a Tlemitl Archer. This was the weapon the Aztecs used to burn down structures of their enemies.

I thought this might make a good replacement for the catapult.

Also, the idea of multi-colored bodysuits is interesting... perhaps a civ-colored bodysuit. Certainly, the long-range weapons would be less likely to wear the jaguar or eagle suits because long-range weapons were left to the commoners for the most part. At the very least, they would not be wearing the full-feathered suits of the higher nobility, so this gives more room for multi-colored outfits. Maybe civ-specific outfits...

Or you can do as Terry Pratchett, and translate it to "The Feathered Boa". :mischief:

My Longbowmen replacements aren't meant to only be using Longbows. Some will be using Crossbows, others will be using Composite Bows, and some will be using the traditional Longbow. They are really just meant to be an upgrade to the basic Archer.

I think Tleatl Guardsman might make for a good name.

But actually, a sort of Aztec fire-lance might have made for a better choice of gunpowder weapon for the Aztecs particularly since the atlatl was their preferred long-distance weapon. And I just don't know if they would've called this new device a "fire javelin"... "fire arrow" works but i really think that a Tlemitl Bowman would make a good siege weapon for the Aztecs.

EDIT: Maybe Tlecuahuitl "Fire Stick".

This thread isn't buried too deep...:mischief: utah, any update? Great work, btw.:goodjob:

Dom i was talking to my wife who is from Mexico, a descendant of the native americans, not the spanish colonizers, and she states that in her opinion your name "Tlecuahuitl" is the one that she would use to describe it as she thinks that was what the Aztecs called the spanish Musketeers they brought along.

Oh BTW the "Aztecs" called themselves the "Mexica", and the term "Aztec" was applied by the Spanish.;)

Cheers Thorgrimm

Hmm...Tlecuahuitl sounds cool...

Uh-hem . . . umm . . . well, I'm still working on it, if that's what you mean. I've been really bogged down lately getting ready for the end of the fall semester here. Today though, I finished a paper earlier than expected and I made the fortify animation. So that and the default are completed.

Well, anyway, I'm making progress . . . slowly.

Patience people, patience :) It's a virtue...

(heh this reminded me of an announcement in Theme Hospital: "Patients are asked to be patient"... :D)
