Xen posted a request for some medieval units for classical civilization, so I created a Pikeman unit based on one of the pictures that he posted.

Well, I have a problem. The soldier in the picture has both a shield and a pike. However, the CivIII Pikeman and C3C Swiss Mercenary only carry a pike. When they attack, they have both hands on the pike--I'm assuming they do this because it's too hard to use with just one hand. So, This unit will either need to lose the shield and attack with two hands or keep the shield and use that big pike with only one hand. What do you guys think?

Very nice! I think you could just make it a spearman, even though many people would use it as pike replacement. Or you could ofcause skip the shield:)

I will gladly use it as a Pikeman because it looks cool. When you're talking about a unit that never historically existed anyway, it shouldn't matter a hell of a lot. I'm happy with it as-is -- let the folks use it however they want (they will anyway).

Sweet stuff. Just a wild idea, but a Musketman or Rifleman with the same kind of helmet would be pretty damn interesting as well ...

 Looks great. Can't wait to take out some Numidian Mercenaries :D

He looks great! I'd like him either way. Since you've already got the shield on there, you might as well leave it.

I might use him as a "Heavy Spearman" to come with Iron Working and replace the not-so-realistic Swordsman.

I'll definetly use him as a pikeman. My suggestion is to put the shield on his back, that way it'll look cool from various angles, but still fit the purpose of the pikeman.

Now if only someone knew how to say "pikeman" or "pike" in latin...

Swordsman - firaxis legionare
Spearman - praetorian guard - bebro's legionare
Pikeman - (latin name) - utahjazz's new unit

well, honestlly, I'd liek to see what he looks like with out the sheild before making a choice ;)

but thanks Utahjazz, I LOVE it :D, another materpeice! :goodjob:!

the preatorins amounted to a SINGLE LEGION!- in other words one elite civ3 army of legionaries, the speaerman is best replaced by its REAL life replacement, the Roman Auxilliary Spearman

Oh man I am so in need of that one.

of course he dose ;), hes a Roman after all ;), and if the was one thing the Roman army was, it was stylish ;)

I think it looks cool. :D
But would it be possible to give him a darker helmet? He's very white right now...
I think it should keep the shield. One possible attack would maybe be to plant the butt of the spear in the ground, point it at the enemy, and raise the shield? This is a completely defensive "Attack", but I think it could look good. :hmm:

Completely off topic: Xen, if you like qotsa (which your sig indicates ;)), you might check out Josh's earlier band, Kyuss. :)

I agree, a darker helm, more in tough with the tone used on the cataphract would be cool (IIRC, its a darker tone...), and planting a butt spike into the ground would make an AWESOME fortifacation animation ;)

@mrtn- I have only heard "Deamon cleaner by Kyuss, but I like it alot ;))

About the shield...couldn't it be reduced to a buckler? That way you get the roman aesthetic, but it's still functional and practical.
