This is a preview thread of what will probably be the biggest WWI scenario created for Civ3 or any of its expansions. It is naturally about the First World War and 2 version are in production. The versions are a Europe version, and a Global version. The Europe version will be released first while the global version will be released at a later date and probably wont have as many units as the Europe one has now (and has planned).

The start is August 5th 1914, by now the germans have begun to enter Belgium heading for the Liege fortress and the British are shipping the BEF to france to aid their allies. Commanding one of the major powers, you must take your objectives and fufill your early-war plans that have been ready for use for years. Wether this be the Ambitious Schlieffen Plan to beat france in 6 weeks, or Plan 17 for a French drive into alscase-lorraine. Eventually if your plan fails you must retreat and entrench yourself in bunkers and fortifications to create a front to hold your enemies, initiating trench warfare.

In the end, your goal is to win the war in 2 ways: By either Winning by domonating the battlefields of europe. or a diplomatic sucess with the founding of the League of nations to end the conflict.

A BETA version is in order and is being produced at this moment. You can apply to have this beta at this thread, though I expect that if you do take the beta to understand there is alot to do with it and I need feedback on things to improve with the BETA.

If you have any specific ideas on things you would like to see in this scenario as far as unit strengths or any other issues, bring them up now before release in order to make The Great War an excellent scenario that we all can enjoy.

Is the plain "Infantry" unit for the Neutrals?

Any ideas to keep selected Neutrals out of the War? Experience from similar projects shows that Germany is likely to annex Denmark, and so on.

The Triple Alliance proper was, as you may know, Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. A better name for the wartime alliance of Germany, AH, Turkey and friends would be "The Central Powers".

American Infantry but no American civ? Are you planning some sort of "American Intervention" unit-spawning Wonder à la in Marla's WWI scen?

What's the European variant's map going to cover?
 
Infantry is for neutral countries that never entered the war.

The use of flavors and/or a possible united locked alliance of the neutrals might be a solution to stop that problem.

Those were generarl names, It will be allied and central powers in the scenario.

I have yet to conclude how the americans will be in, an american civ might be in, but probably not. It will likely be a wonder that put an "American Reinfocements" building in every city that churns out American infantry every turn.

The map covers mainland europe but also covers: North Africa, Suez Canal, Mesopotamia, Arabia, and The Caucasus. This map shown the entire Ottoman ampire unlike most europe maps used for scenarios where it was just Anatolia that was shown or parts of north africa. This map probably reaches as south as Northern Sudan, as North as Iceland, as west as the mid-atlantic, and as east as Kuwait and slightly beyond the Urals, also covering all of European Russia.
 
All of the Ottoman Empire? That would technically require the map to reach all the way down to Yemen ...

Any plans to represent the Arab Revolt?

Every city churns out one American Infantry each turn? That's going to have some impact, to say the least!

Which countries are going to be playable?

for 10-20 cities to churn out a unit every turn is accurate for this scenario as it already has mass units. The Turkish land army alone is over 100 units and germany's is over 300 units to start.

This is a mass-combat scenario, pure and simple but with the historical details and accuracies.

Arabs wont be ready in time for the beta, but they will be quite a military force coming from them that will be essential.

actually, the ottomans in 1914 only went to suez, not to yemen.

How to solve the US intervention aspect will
be the most important subject in The Great War.

Was Arabia a real country in 1914? I thought it was a loose union of varoius tribes revloting aganist the Ottomans?

Also will Britan have her dominions repersented? ie Austrlia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa IIRC GB army was almost 1/4 from these countries.
 
With regard to Australia, New Zealand and so on
it can be solved with auto-production.

With regard to US some form of trigger must be created
so the US Army do not show up in Flandern 1914.

Im using the same map that was used in my Red-Europe map. Naturally city placement was redone and so are units.

Im thinking of having a wonder that appears a little later in the tech tree to get american units.

Im wondering what the timing should be. Weeks? Months?
 
True, There is an Italian infantry custom unit (it was listed in the units being added currently section of the features). As far as alpine troops are concerned, they might make their way into it. What does everyone else think?

Hijaz, Asir and Yemen were under Ottoman formal
control 1914. So if you redefine to 90% of the Ottoman
Empire no one can say you are wrong.....
(Aden was under British control).

The important aspect though is that the Palestina front,
the Mesopotamia front and the Caucasus front ARE included.

With regard to timing I suggest weeks.

The Americans troops must arrive at the last months of the war because more than 2 million troops eventually reached Europe but a large number arrived too late to see any action.

On the contrary you must have the british overseas troops since the first turn. And the same for the French colonial troops because 475,000 colonial troops had been called up to fight in the French Army.

I think that in any 20th century scenario the most realistic timing should be weeks. Think in the fast unit movements in the german east front, they never take months to move the troops.:rolleyes:
 
About the alliances I propose that Bulgaria must be with the central Powers, Rumania with the allies.

And about Italy: Was really a neutral nation?
 
I agree with bulgaria being with the central powers, but Romania only k=joined the allies late in the war. I also think the Italian player should make their own choice on who they will fight as that was the choice before the Italians before joining the allies.
