Privateers must be awesome!

Privateers would be invaluable if it generally wouldn't take 900 to blockade an enemy on deity. i did bump up their attack to allow them to raid galleons and caravels, but be no match for frigates. allow though it would be annoying, i wish the ai would use them against my shipping lanes.
Privateers are not a military asset. Just as in the american revolution, privateers are most effective against trade routes.

(and killing the caravel with that **** settler coming to build one city on my continent)

Privateers is a great idea, and travelling in packs with them would be nice if there werent so many other things worth building more. The big problem with privateers is that your allies are more likely to sink them with the enemy.

The Privateer actually holds up stronger on defense so it is actually better to "lurk" near most ships (have sunk frigates and ironclad on defense).

I am waiting for a mod that makes sea better to play...

Personally, Privateers are very useful. If you want to colonize an island, send about 5 privateers out to sink ANY transport that passes by. It would probably have a settler in it. In this fashion, privateer can kill expansions.

:die!:

An uncolonised island? Never seen an uncolonised island so late into the game...partly because I always play with 16 civs.

I accidently build a privateer in my last game as the Aztecs. I got great pleasure when it accidently sank an Indian sub before justifying a cruise missile strike :D

I haven't changed the mods for privateers, other than my standard movement boost to ships (0 for ancient, +1 for middle, +2 for industrial, +3 for modern). However, I have made them upgradable to submarines, who go to nuclear submarines. The attack and def on subs have been increased a bit, 6/4/5 for sub, forget bout nuke sub. Think those are right... So far its working out pretty good for me, and I like to wreak havoc on the other civs in times of peace with my hidden nationality subs. thats what they get for being annoyed with me. I feel that subs are better hidden nationality ships than privateers, cause with subs, you can't see the color and therefor the nationality. Also, privateers are rather useless and I think the hidden nationality is too cool a trait to be used on only 1, and a rather useless one, unit.

I don't generally use privateers for 1 main reason, I usually am not building a navy in the wooden ship era. I added Rouge Subs to my .BIC as a modern day privateer. Those I use alot. One thing I wish they would fix is that a civ gets mad at you if you use the hidden nationality units against them. I mean seriously, if it is hidden Nationality then it should be hidden and the civ should not get pissed at you specificly.

Give it up for some one copying off me!!!

Except my subs are more powerful than that. I got tired of enemy ironclads and frigates hunting them down. Boy, I sure wish the enemy couldn't see things that have the Invisible flag set!

About the only way to really protect privateers and subs is to have another boat tag along with them. Transports and galleons and destroyers are just fine for this. Your sub makes a strike, then your transport sits over it and doesn't get counterattacked. Yippee!! :king:

Hey, d3dash, can you tell me how to alter the graphics files? I would also like rouge submarines...

There is nothing really to modify on the graphics, I simply used the copy tool to duplicate the Sub, renamed it to rouge sub, gave it hidden nationality, and there ya go a rouge sub. I also gave subs a lethal bombard on sea with a range of one. Enjoy the terrorist acivitys. :)

I don't use privateers for a simple reason - they are useless. They, and subs, are in reality designed to attack MERCHANT SHIPPING, not enemy warships. But there is no way to get them to damage enemy trade even if you had a hundred of them on that enemy's ocean trade routes. :crazyeye: Naval warfare is pathetic is Civ 3. I turned privateers into crossbowmen and made longbwmen 4.3.1. English UU's.

If you're a democracy, and the world is at peace, they help to keep the other civ's outposts from being built up.

Waitaminnit, D3dash, you said rouge subs. The subs in my game are a silvery color... or did you mean rogue subs?:D
