Problem loading saved games mid-game with vista

Hello, I recently bought a new computer, Radeon 4850 graphics card, 6 gigs of ram, 2.6 (I believe) processor, and Vista.

The game's running exceptionally well, (I installed the original game + beyond the sword) however I see two problems coming up again and again.

1. I am never able to load a saved game while in the middle of a civilization IV "match" or... "game". I can load from the main screen of Civ.IV no problem, however, in cases where I cautiously save to test a battle plan out, only to have it fail, I am unable to load once things go sour.

So in other words, hitting "esc", hitting load on the small menu, and then selecting a saved game causes the game to stop, and forces a window to pop up with a "windows is attempting to fix this problem" line. It list the files related/describing the problem:

Files that help describe the problem:
C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Local\Temp\WER396E.tmp.version.txt
C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Local\Temp\WER59DA.tmp.appcompat.txt
C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Local\Temp\WER59FA.tmp.mdmp

2. My second problem is annoying, but no where near as bad, ever time I start up civ.IV and it gets to the main screen, a window (from civ.IV) pops up and says that I've selected an unusuable voice capturing device that is not supported. I have to then click the window 3 to 4 times before it disappears completely (each click just makes it more transparent).

I'm still very new to this computer and Vista, so a detailed step by step method of how to fix this would be nice. Or just any help in general.

Thank you very much for your time.

welcome to cfc :band:

for 1) open the windows event manager (search for it in the windows search function) after the game crashes and try to see if there is any error message logged - post that here :)
for 2) open my games\<gamename>\civilizationIV.ini
each of the games (i.e. Civ4 and BtS) has their own.
look for the line that says:

; Enable voice over IP capture and playback
EnableVoice = 1

change that to

; Enable voice over IP capture and playback
EnableVoice = 0
