Problems logging on with Gamespy

Alright, I found this forum because I'm at my absolute end here.

The game runs fine, absolutely no technical problems to speak of. Then I try to go and play online... I go to create a new gamespy ID through Civ IV, put my email address, nickname, password... error. I create a Gamespy ID through the website gamespyid.com. Go back into Civ IV, try to get online with it... error. I then found out that if I create an ID through gamespyid.com, then use that same info to create an ID through Civ IV, that would work (it actually worked for a friend of mine), but still get an error.

This is absolutely ridiculous that I can't get online. I've even tried play Direct IP games with my friend, both of us would try being the host, but the other person would always time out. I've spent the last two hours trying to get this to work with no avail.

LAN works, my friend and I played for a good 4 hours last night on a LAN, but we can't always be lugging out computers to each other's houses, so I got to figure out how the hell to get this working on the internet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you're having the same issues I'm having.
I'm pretty sure it's something to do with Firewall ports (or at least port forwarding if you use a router)
You can tell by the fact that your local game runs fine, so there's only an issue trying to leave your network through your modem/router (Just pure assumption about your network setup at this point of course)

I've been looking high and low on forums, manuals, tech support sites, for ANY indication as to what the standard ports are for Civ4 (and gamespy I suppose)
and the best I've found so far on these forums is an old post for civ3, so I can only assume that the ports won't work for civ4, or are outdated somehow, but I could be wrong.

I'll keep looking for the ports or a solution, but if anyone can confirm/deny/help, I'd appreciate it.

Cheers

Yeah, that doesn't work. I opened all those ports on my router and it didn't affect the problem. Doesn't suprise me, either, I've played a hell of a lot of online games and used a lot of online apps, and I've never once had to open any ports in my router.

I have the same problem ThreePi. It's not a firewall problem b/c I can log on with Railroad Tycoon 2 and 3. I can't even get Gamespy to recognize my game. I hope someone out there has an answer. Thanks.
