Problems play AOE2 in Vista

Hi, I just installed AOC again after getting all nostalgic about it. However, whenever I play it, it alway starts to lag after a couple of minutes. I am running it on Vista, yet compatibility mode doesn't work. I heard something about a patch that allows it to play; do I need that? How can I get AOC to work on my computer?
