Production cities

Hi,

In most of my games when I already have a large army and am not going to war in the near future I get my prod cities to build libaries and than research. Is this normal? What do you do with your production cities when there is nothing to build?

I always, always, have to build more troops... But I may take 4 or 5 turns to build a CH or a Library. Also, I have to take turns to build Heroic Epic, West Point, Ironworks...
 
Your first mistake is thinking there is nothing to build... If you are a cottage spammer than your few production cities should almost always be building military units. However, if you are like me and don't build cottages at all and do more of an SE economy than it is fine to build libraries,universities, etc. in your production cities; however, I wouldn't use them to produce research because I believe that the hammers are converted to science, but they dont go through the multipliers like libaries, so It is of no benefit to have a library if you are going to use production for research.
 
Well I didn't mean I build research for turns on end. But if I have no need for any milirary units than I might build research for 10? turns. Thanks for the tip on built research not going through library.
 
Libraries do NOT affect the beakers generated by building research (The same goes for gold. Not sure about culture multipliers). Forge and other hammer multipliers, however, do increase the number of beakers since the hammers are first multiplied and then converted.

Still, you are probably better off building more troops. If you have outdated troops you can start disbanding them, instead of paying upgrade fees, to keep costs down. That said, if you build research while going for a tech that allows you to build something in that city then it can be beneficial since you will get that tech sooner. Building research (or gold) as a default is probably not the best idea. Save building for emergency (generally over-REX) or to help you meet a goal (tech or money) more quickly that you then plan on leveraging (mass-upgrades and war, quick-tech and then perform trades or get the bonus - Liberalism or free Great People).
 
If you have so many troops that its difficult to pay for them all then its better not to build any more. Besides research or wealth you could always build missionaries and spread evry religion you have access to to all your cities. It will be worth it if you ever go to Free Religion.
