This is my guide to a fast! Multiplayer game.

First of all let me say that the mp game is way too slow at the momement it took 3 hours to reach turn 100 for a 6 player game. This is just not acceptable.

These settings produce a fun game MUCH faster. By the turn 40-50 wars start and aggressive expansion is very real.

TEAMER RESEARCH.

Research in this game in MP takes way too long. One option to deal with it is to play a TEAMER 2v2 or 3v3. This way you get double or triple research which means you can start making fun a lot sooner. This produces extra 30 turns of actual fun game play. Even if you get stuck with a noob it still helps a lot to have a FAST game.

I understand some people don't like teamer games but at this moment this is the only way to make the game fast playable in multiplayer.

ERA

DO NOT start in ancient era. Start with at least Classical or Medieval.

With Medieval Start you get 2 settlers, 3 military units and 1 worker. Which helps with the speed issue A LOT A LOT!

Until they patch it I say there is absolutely NO REASON to start with an Ancient Era.

This alone saves you at least 40 TURNS - or at least 35-40 minutes of boring gameplay time where you just wait for stuff to research or finish building. In SP its ok but in MP NO GOOD.

By the time you finish expanding EVERYONE will leave the game and you will end up with AI which apparently now lags the game.

Resourses

Always run with a Legendary Start. This also helps with the speed issue - saves you 10 turns or so of gameplaytime (usually looking for a place to get the extra resourse etc.)

Speed

quck

Map Size

Small with 6 player works best because standard produces some very strange lag and speed issues.

City States

DISABLE CITY STATES. or 1 max. (lags the game)

What are your thoughts guys on this? And why people still play in slow games? Whenever I visit the lobby its all bad bad bad slow games.

I hope this helps someone.

how is a teamer game part of the proper ffa settings?

otherwise i think quick/ancient is good enough as long as everyone ends their turn quick ><

lots of interesting openers can be used if u start in ancient

I KNOW you didn't play many MP games yet dude.

If you start on Ancient by the time you finish your "interesting openers" EVERYONE WILL LEAVE THE GAME. People will spend 3 hours doing nothing and just leave. This happens to me even with palying friends.

So what you are saying is wrong and only viable if you have 10 hours to play.

If you want FAST FFA choose my settings otherwise it will take MANY hours with this game.

It's not an FFA if there are teams is what his point is I think... and he's right. Even with always war out, if there's only one other team you have no other incentive but to attack them since you have to beat that other team to win...

And given that FFA and teamers attract different kinds of players it's an important distinction to make (saving myself from arrowhead coming in here and accusing me of making semantic arguments).

I've played about 4 1v1s in multiplayer and 5 FFAs (3 of which ended very quickly due to people leaving). So yes I see your point but its not always going to be like that. I think they need more stable servers/less buggy programs and then some sort of record system to discourage 'early quiters' or something similar to that (points for whatever rank you come in?).

And I might add the FFA experience is very fun but people still 'buddy up' instead of acting like completely rational nation states but what can you do people are people. The problem is its hard to get a bunch of good people together. So please check out my other thread about the Decent Player List (DPL) and sign up!

Quitters were a problem in Civ IV too. That's kind of a major problem no matter what. The league addresses that somewhat with the reporting system, but other than that any kind of Steamworks implemented system will probably not be able to effectively deal with quitters.

FFA - mean Free For All where does it say no teams?????????

Yea this is what I am trying to say. If you do not start a game in Medieval or classical Age, by the time fun starts everyone will leave the game and you will be left with the AI.

You HAVE to sacrifice the early start for this to work. When they patch the game and create a way to have a faster game ALL my games will be (Teamer + Medieval start)

Now with these settings my games finish at around 3hr playtime.

If you go with (ancient+no team research) - I never finished a single game everyone just left.

Just accept that multiplayer is in shambles right now... While your effort is appreciated, ultimately, I think pacing issues will persist until civs on the map can be increased and a faster turn timer becomes available.
