Protecting Resources from bombardment

I noticed the following last night. Should have picked this up sooner! :(

When I place a tank or another unit on a luxury tile, The AI can bombard on the unit, but will not destroy my roads / rails to the luxury. If however the luxury tile is left unoccupied the AI would focus all his bombers on pillaging my luxury (exactly what I do to him of course).

So I just began parking a tank on any luxury / resource tile within bomber range of the AI. The war went pretty quick my way (102 artillery will do that for you  ) and I never had to build a road to my resources again. In the future I’m going to “cover” these tiles before I go to war. :D:

That's really cool. It's not even that unbelievable -- in the real world, there is almost always a heavy military presence around vital resources.

I'm trying to decide if making yourself immune to resource warfare is "exploitive" or not. I guess doing it that way isn't much different that just parking enough Workers on the tile to road it up the turn after bombardment finishes, which I was doing anyway. :mischief:

Sweet -- another use for those unupgraded Warriors!

Its not exploitive. I have seen the ai cover their resources this way. They even fortify them with castles.

Why not cover them with fighters too.

You know, that is even a better idea. Park a worker on the tile, (workers don't have any hit points to lose) and it will free up another tank for attack.

Bad idea. The bombs will fall through them and hit the ground, destroying the improvements.

rarely is the luxuries and resources present vital in the game once bombers become the bombardment weapon of choice as usually the land under your control has multiple sources of most resources, so I am happy to sit my workers there and fix everything. It gives the AI something to do next time that achieves nothing for their stategy, like ususal

I do park a defensive unit on the resource. I also move more than 2 workers on the tile to fix it after it has had the rail bombarded. If you shift A (automate worker) then the program will only send 2 workers to fix the tile.

Also, if you bombard the tile enough, you can reduce the unit to 1 hp/ destroy roads and destroy a radar tower. It does take a lot but can be done.

Well, I wouldn't say rarely. There are times where you have just gained control of new real estate with luxuries and they must be protected until you gain more ground. Also, If you lose an extra resource due to bombardment that you have recently aquired, it will screw up any trades with other civ.

I also do what kb2tvl does: I park workers over bombarded tiles so they can immediately be fixed. This keeps the AI occupied with bombarding the same tile over and over again while I flank him with my superior armies!

I seem to recall that once all units on tile is down to one HP, the shells start destroying improvements. Is that not so?

Yes it is, as kb2tvl pointed out. I sometimes use a lot of bombardment units to take an AI unit down to 1 HP so I can get to the Radar Tower that it is defending.

I like your signature, btw!

:wallbash: Yeah, I apparently had a momentary spell of blindness.

As for my sigline, yes, it's pretty nifty, isn't it? To bad I can't claim authorship - I nicked it from a girl on a mailinglist, who's a minor goddess of siglines. It goes wonderfully with my alias, does it not?

But - military units recover HP; tile improvements do not repair themselves. Although, the AI is bound to come up to your unit and attack it eventually.
