Before i get started, i would prefer to own a Gamecube or maybe Xbox but this PS2 was insurance for when my brothers was stolen, and when he moved out he left it to me (i don't have the money for a new console at the mo/ever).

Well at first it was working fine, i was playing on it for about 2-4 weeks after i recieved it off of insurance, then first time my brother played on when he got back from holiday, it broke  . Now everytime you put a disc in it just says disc read error :(. My sisters boyfriend took a look at it and cleaned the laser (and broke the warranty  ) but it still doesn't work. I wasn't that fussed as my bro took most of his games with him (and i only ever owned around 4/5) but now TS:Future Perfect is coming out i would like it fixed with as little cost as possible, as i also need to buy a CD walkman and TS:FP.

Any advice would be great, thanks :goodjob:

PS: Its an English PS2 if that makes any difference.

Not an uncommon occurance at all. A friend of mine went through like three PS2's. I personally know nothing about this, but there's three FAQs for this matter over at GameFAQs:

Oh, and I personally would hold back on Timesplitters: Future Perfect. So far, the game looks essentially the same as TS2, which you can find for only $20. It's still another week before the game is released, so I'd probably wait for the reviews to see whether it's worth paying an extra $30 for Future Perfect.

Sounds like the usual faulty dvd drive problem. I had the same thing happen to my xbox.

How old is the console? If it less than a year old then you can get it fixed/replaced for free under the sale of goods act. If it is more than a year then it will probably be cheaper to buy a new console.

If you do send it away to get fixed, make sure they replace the dvd drive. If they just try to repair it then the problem will come back. It's a fault in the design, not a malfunction.

I already hav TS 1+2 :D, and this is my second PS2 to break. I don't know if i can send it to be fixed for free as that sticker that is required for the warranty was removed, unless this is something else  And i'm thiking of getting a gamecube to replace it if it can't be fixed for cheap...

Oh, and thanks :goodjob:

I just got my PS2 back from being fixed (read disc error also). I've owned it for about 3 years now, got the error and called up Sony tech support. The lady told me that I could send it to them to get fixed for free, all I had to pay was the shipping and handling. They replaced the optics, some HLK connector, and did something with the memory card slot. It works fine now.

However, sense your warrenty is broken, I don't know if there accept it or not.

Sony are obviously a lot better than M$ at admitting their design faults then.

When I got fed up with the dirty disc errors (DDEs) on my xbox, I did some research on the problem. M$ do not recognise the DDEs as a design flaw, they just tell people to wipe the hard drive as a corrupt save game is at fault. It seems the only way you can get an xbox fixed for free after the warranty has expired is to lie about the problem.

After reading other people's stories about DDEs it turned out that it would cost about £100 to get it fixed, which is the same price as a brand new console. I therefore bought a new one (which has a new dvd drive design that is free from DDEs, though M$ won't admit it).

Well with help from Silverflame :goodjob: i have found some helpful faqs on how to fix my PS2, if that doesn't work (and if it does) i'm probably gonna buy a 2nd hand Gamecube with 2 controllers and a memory card. I will then preorder TS:FP and get the new Zelda when its released :D.
