I live in an area without public transportation, so I'm not sure what to vote but I'm guessing the "i live in an area with public transportation" is just a typo and you meant to say without

Where on earth did you live in Ottawa to give it a 'bad' rating? Ottawa gets a 'good' to 'very good' from me. Columbus gets a 'bad'

Good transit round here, questionable riders...

Not that good. Apparently the bus systems have this line of no-go right between where I live and where I work. So if I were to take the bus to work, I'd have to take 3 buses and it'd take 45 minutes as opposed to driving in my car and it taking 10 minutes.

Buses coming late or never.

What routes? I've had a bus not show up only a few times, causing me to wait 15 minutes for the next one....

Then again, I only used major routes / transitway.

Toronto used to be 'very good', now it's just 'good'.

The service is getting worse as the city expands.

Good system, unfortunately no system can really take care of the crowds here - don't return home at 5-7 PM during weekdays - it could take you 30 minutes with a bus, between two stations (in the center).

I'm really proud of the Metro though. Looks more modern than that of any other city I've been to (like Madrid, London). The stations aren't that great, but the trains itself are.

All in all, disadvantages: there are some old, bad buses; the city is too crowded (I know it's not really the fault of the public transportation)
Advantages: you can get ANYWHERE with the buses; the metro is very fast (unfortunately there are only 4 lines, but it's still useful) and modern; bus stations are everywhere, I have 3.5 minutes walking distance to the nearest one, 4.5 to the second nearest and 5 to the third nearest.

So "good" on European scale, "very good" on world scale. I do have to point out that the system here in the capital is better than that of other cities in my country.

The trains in the South/South East of England are great. I grew up in Wales, and I have never before experienced such comprehensive train coverage. You can get pretty much anywhere in the South by train. It's quite pricey though -- more expensive than driving, even if you factor in insurance / tax / petrol etc.

Buses in Crawley are pretty average, similar to the town I grew up in. The city really was geared for driving, though.

London, OTOH, has an excellent bus network, which is still fairly cheap. Definitely cheaper than driving in any town, and cheaper than buses in any city I've visited in the UK. The underground is crowded and rather too inconvenient for me (takes forever just to get to the platform!), but it's still adequate. But the buses in London really do excel. You can get anywhere on a bus, for next to nothing.

EDIT: I voted based on my impression of public transport vs driving/other alternatives. I voted Good, since I'd generally prefer to take public transport than to drive, though of course this varies from place to place.

The bus only comes by once every half hour or so in the suburbs of DC where I live, so I have to walk 20 minutes. Also, the train sometimes gets delayed. Other than that not so bad.

I have to say I'm really disappointed with American public transport systems. Here if a bus comes at more than 5-6.. ok 7 minutes from the previous one, it's considered a very bad line. While in the US, I had to walk all the time. :(

DC is good. It could be better. Its really good inside the city. When you get out side the beltway it gets worse. But thats mostly time reasons. We could use some more express routs.

Good. Almost very good. You can get almost anywhere in the city with public transport. Not to mention it's free for the most part and if not free it's dirt cheap. (I heart demosocialism)

I'd say I'm really fortunate. I live a block from the brown/purple lines and within 5 blocks of all the other lines. Cab drivers like to eat at a Pakistaini/Indian restaurant a few blocks from me so cabs are plentiful. There's a number of "share a cars" within a few blocks of my house so that's really helpful. I don't take many buses and when I've taken the metra rail it's been great.

I'd like to see the speed improve on the "el" but that's pretty minor.

Nonexistent.

Northern Los Angeles (far outside the city proper)- Passable but a 5-10 minute late bus, or in the case of the one I take in the morning, 5 minute early bus is normal. Lately they've not been showing up at all in the afternoons.

Columbus gets a 'bad'
I agree, although thats mostly because our highways are actually pretty good. Traffic isn't so bad, so there isn't a high enough public demand for change. The CABS bus service is great, but that only services the OSU Campus area. COTA buses don't often run on time, and are really unsafe. There are also rumors that they're going on strike in 2 weeks, which means Columbus will have no public transport.

There have been plans to develop a commuter rail line here for the past several years, or a trolley system, but they're always voted down.

DC is good. It could be better. Its really good inside the city. When you get out side the beltway it gets worse. But thats mostly time reasons. We could use some more express routs.

Thats been my experience too. Aren't they building another Metro line just for the suburbs? Purple?
