PureNES - The End of Innocence

To: Emperor Darius I of Persia
From: Czar Nicholas Lakitov of Russia

How is this a betrayal? Unless I am missing something all I did was sign an alliance that said I would come to Babylon's aid should they be attacked by Persia or Greece. I did not declare war or do anything to harm your nation. I still have much respect for your nation. Maybe you should get the facts straight before making slanderous comments about my nation.

To: Babylon
From: Russia

I am afraid I cannot enter into a trade embargo against Persia, however our alliance will still stand, be be warned, I will not aid you should you attack anyone, only if you are attacked.

I request your friendship, agree to an NAP, and sign an all too generous trade deal and your respond by blocking my motions for the return of my land by threatening war if I attempt to do so.

How is this not betrayal?

To Persia:
America is young, yes, but we already know the pain of much war. The French-and-Indian War for control of the Ohio, the Revolution that made us a country, and let us not forget 1812, when the very White House I am writing to you from was burned to the ground! Do not be so insolent and foolish as to tell us we do not know war. You may know 1,000 years of war with sword and spear, but have you ever seen what a week-long naval bombardment does to an isolated city, with its people starving and its once-grand buildings burning? I didn't think so. Until you have seen modern war, do not even speak of what I have not seen! I will stand by Babylon in defense, but not in offense. Any attack launched by Babylon will compromise my alliance and likely compel me to act in a quite contrary manner. Now, Emperor of Persia, heed the words of the President of the United States. You will drop your claim to the rightfully won lands of Greece, or be forever remembered in the history books as the man who so foolishly started a world war over two provinces, and who destroyed his nation and those of his allies in the process. It is not a pretty legacy to leave, Darius.

I do not mind if you get the land diplomatically from Babylon, however if you try to take it by force I will declare war. Infact, I encourage you to get the land from Babylon peacefully.

Subj.: Reply

So then, you would block the right thing if it meant avoiding war? What possible incentive does Babylon have to do what is right if it is in its best intrests to do what is wrong and refuse to cede the territories peacefully?

The MPP was designed to prevent Persia from gaining the territories that are rightfully hers, and I am well aware of it.

From: Emperor Darius I of Persia
Subj.: Re: Babylon

We experienced modern war and modern defeat all too recently, Mr. President. That was what the war with Babylon was. Your nation does not know defeat, your people do not know suffering, your people do not know what it is to be a nation on the brink of collapse.

I can only hope that this is taken in the right tone, as I am presuming that my last letter to you was. I am completely perplexed by your reply; I bare no hostility towards your nation, and do not seek to upset you, but beseech thy good nature, and not thy blade.

To: Persia
From: Russia

The land is rightfully Baybylon's. One, they gained it fair and square, and two, it has been under thier control for a while now. The MPP was designed to protect Babylon from nations like you who seek to take advantage of the weakness of Baybylon to steal territory that is "rightfully theirs" from a weak Babylon.

To: America
From: Russia

We are glad that we have your support in this issue. We seek to open trade to better improve the well being of our nations.

To Persia:
You can understand our confusion as to how you could have fought a modern war with a nation in the Middle Ages. However, we now understand that Late Middle Ages annotates a period much like our Colonial period. Your letter drew a hostile response because it was indeed misinterpeted as being hostile. We apologize. However, do not say my people do not know hardships. During our two wars with Britain, countless towns were burned, homes destroyed, and famililes torn apart. When we first became a nation, we were on the brink of collapse without having a declared foe! I will try to hold my temper in check in our future dealings, but I still support Babylon.

Update for 1851 (Turn 1)

Not much happened lol, but here goes:

Regular News

The world increases its industrial power, with Germany (due a huge increase in production), Aztlan (recent sacrifices of natives made the people happy), China (the huge human powerhouse of the world managed to increase production), Greece (the Spartans of Greece preparing for war means a large increase in morale) and Zululand (the Impis going to war always makes the civilians work hard, and now being under attack is really making them determined to help) being the economic powerhouses of the world at the moment.

Remember upgrading 5,000 men costs ALL 3 points, not just 1 lol.

There was a lot of expansion worldwide.

Oh, and new techs are available, see the end of the post, just after the map.

COMBAT REPORTS

There was only one major war this turn, and a few scuffles with natives:

Native Defence

The most bloodthirsty expansion was in Aztlan, which made a few western South American tribes surrender, and one Amazonian one, but then they encountered the fearsome female tribe, known only as the Amazonians.

The fighting was fierce, with the Aztecs losing nearly 4,000 men, but they eventually overcame the five thousand strong tribe, killed all those who fought and seperated the rest out like so, as ordered by the ruler:

"All men between 16-36 will be held as slaves. Any man not fit to serve as slaves will also be sent to the SHA.
All Men between 0-5 will be adopted by the Army and will be trained as soldiers.
All men between 6-15 will be sent to the SHA to be sacrificed to the gods.
All men aged 37 and above will be executed, and their bodies used to fertilize the fields of Aztlan.
All women aged 15-25 will be held as slaves.
All women between 0-5 will be adopted by goverment approved families in Aztlan.
All women above 25 will be executed and their bodies used to fertilize the fields of Aztlan"

After this fearsome display, many tribes surrendered, but some fought to the last person, causing another 1,000 losses for the Aztecs.

***

Britain is now at war with the Aborigines, who opposed their expansion into Australia. Britain lost 50 artillery when they were captured by Aborigine troops. The British Army managed to kill many natives using their cavalry, which the Aborigines have never seen before, but the 50 artillery have been spirited off somewhere, and military analysts predict that the natives will try to fire them using the supplies they stole, and maybe use them against anyone colonising Australia.

This incident has sent out a clear message to those colonising Australia - watch out for the Aborigines!

Egypt invades Zululand!

General Mpondo watched the Egyptians crossing the border, and felt fury in his warrior heart.

This was not supposed to be the way that war was declared.

He had ten thousand Zulu under his command, 10 Impi, and another 10,000 within one day's march.

As for the warriors on horses - he would never call them cavalry, he considered it an insult to their warrior spirit - he had 15,000 under his command, or 15 Impi, and the remaining 10 Impi were within a day or two - some even less.

And he had all of the Zulu's 250 artillery and 26 of the Zulu's ships under his command.

He considered artillery a pathetic weapon - not worthy of a warrior, but against this number of Egyptians and with their technology, he would have to use it.

And use it well.

At least defence is always easier than attack... he thought as he studied the land. The Zulu were better at attack than defence, but while counter-attacking and holding at forts counted as defence in his book, they mostly used the Zulu's strongpoints.

He looked again.

50,000 Egyptian soldiers, 5,000 cavalry (he had no problems calling them cavalry), and 350 of their infidel artillery. Not to mention the Egyptian fleet, most of which he guessed would be somewhere nearby.

This battle would be epic...

***

5 Impi of warriors and 15 Impi of warriors on horses were having to be left behind as the Zulu were forced to retreat, and abandoning most of their artillery.

The warriors had held the forts while the horses roamed around the enemy, striking whenever they got the opportunity. The Egyptian cavalry had been led in a foolish charge by a general who thought his forces were so superior to the Zulu, and they had been totally wiped out. The general's name was Custer, and it would forever be known as Custer's Last Stand.

Apparently he was quite a celebrity in Egypt, and Mpondo hoped they would find his last stand chilling enough to leave Zululand. For he no longer seemed to have the strength to do so.

The Zulu had fought far beyond their ability, and what their technology should have restricted them to, inflicting 15,000 casualties on the Egyptian army, and of course the famous killing of the Egyptian cavalry, but they had only lost 50 artillery compared to the Zulu's 200.

All in all, Mpondo thought, he could say the Zulus had won a tactical victory here, even if they were withdrawing to fight another day. But they hadn't won the strategic victory - they had lost too many men, and now Egypt had the strength to crush the rest of Zululand...

The only comforting news was from the sea, and from his pre-battlefield reports. The Egyptian navy had received no orders it seemed, and so had continued as usual. When war had been declared, the Zulu navy struck north as Mpondo had ordered, catching 20 Egyptian ships off guard. The numerical advantage (26 against 20) and surprise had paid off against the tech advantage, and they had managed to destroy three quarters of the enemy fleet, for the loss of just under half of their own.

The pre-battle reports had said that Egyptians had tried to infiltrate the Zulu positions, but most of them didn't have the same colouring or warrior traditions of the Zulu, and were spotted easily and executed in terrible ways. But they had also said that the infantry would be concentrating on the horse warriors, and they were right - Zulu cavalry losses were terrible.

We live to fight another day, Mpondo thought, but how many more days do we have?

Techs:

NAVAL TECHS:

We are currently still stuck with wooden ships and sailships, but next turn I will unveil these techs:

Iron ships - Requires Middle Industrial Age tech level. Costs 7 points. Makes your ships a lot hardier and more heavily armoured.

Steamships - Requires Early Industrial Age tech level. Costs 5 points. Makes your ships a lot more reliable, no longer having to rely on the wind, but unless you have the Iron Ships tech, this tech can make your wooden ships a lot more hazardous due to the obvious - the burning of coal. This will improve your economy, and make your navy stronger.

Breech-loading guns - Requires Early Industrial Age tech level. Costs 5 points. Makes your ships much more deadly, but with the obvious risks involved unless your ships are made of iron. Lethal against wooden ships, and the only decent weapon against iron ships.

LAND TECHS:

Breech loading rifles Suddenly your troops are a lot more deadly in attack and defence - able to fire quicker at the enemy and reload under fire. You must have the Early Industrial Age tech, and this costs 5 gold.

Early Gatling Gun Requires the Middle Industrial Age tech level, and this costs 7 gold. The early Gatling guns are unreliable, and go through ammo like it is going out of fashion, but they are deadly in defence - although they are too cumbersome to attack with.

Railways Requires the Early Industrial Age tech level. Has a huge effect on your economy, but costs 10 gold.

Thanks, and good luck!

The Zulu Emperor is enraged at this blatant agression!

Dearest Rome:

We, the people of Zululand, formally request that you join us in our righteous war of defence against Egypt.

Dearest Azteca

We are reletively new allies, but i ask that you help us forge our freindship in the defence of the Zulu homeland.

A statement from the Zulu Government to all nations of the Earth

Dearest nations of earth,

We have long been a primitive nation, laggin behind the rest. And as you arm yourselves for a war you fear on the horizon I know, and understand, that every credit is a blessing, every ounce of gold a brick in your fortress.

But we must arm ourselves now, not for the future, but for our endangered present. Please help the Zulu Empire accumulate the 10 gold (5 to go) needed to bring herself into the Early Modern age that you enjoy. If our voice is drowned out among the brotherhood of nations who will fall next?

I will be joining the conference in Byzantium.
As for the surprise that is for anybody that declares war on me and invade me nothing else. The greeks in Anatolia live like normal Babylonians and have the same rights. 63 years are alot of time and almost no "greeks" still live anymore. Their kids where raised as Babylonians and incorporated into babylonian society. Any more claims from your side are purely just to increase your power.

We are as small and backwards nation as you. We wish we could help you, but we have no means of transporting our men to your land. We will help fund your progress though and hope it will be enough. May the gods smile upon you.

We condemn your incursions in to Zululand. Zulu gods and Aztlan gods will descend from the skies and bring terror to the Egyptian lands much worse then Moses god did.

From:Pharaoh Ahmed ben Yussuf of Egypt
To:Leaders of European,American and Asian nations

We Egyptians,as the leading African Muslim nation with the great Al-Azhar University in Cairo, seek to free all Africa Muslims from Pagan oppression. The backwards Zulus do neither believe in Allah or God or Vishnu or Buddha, but in strange, hostile entities entitled to dominate and enslave all true believers. We once stopped our expansion on the rain forest,as the people living there are Pagans and we won't go further there. But the many Muslims of Ethiopia,Somalia,Uganda and Kenya have to be united with their advanced Egyptian brothers and have a right to live with the wonders of modern Egypt. As soon as this is accomplished,we'll leave the pituful Zulus alone and continue to cooperate with all civilized nations in world peace and prosperity.

Do not presume to think that you can threaten mighty Aztlan on its homeland. The Aztlan Army will expand as it sees fit. If it hinders your colonial expansion, good. If it doesn't, consider yourself lucky.
But let it be known that Quetzalcoatl is a wise and peaceful leader and he wishes to sign a trade agreement with you.

Sorry guys...

But I must resign from all NESs and from moderating PureNES - I've got too much happening in my life at the moment, and I'm afraid NESs will have to be the casualty.

For PureNES: I will PM the positions etc to the next person who mods this game, as I hope someone will step forward, and forward any orders that have already been sent.

I will probably continue to write stories, but this will only be when I have time and am bored - although it seems I may have a lot of college work to fill that time at the moment.

Once again I apoligise.

ok, we need a new mod, lol. And we can invite more people.

Here's my idea, if Toasty is willing to accept it.

When you PM orders, do it to both Toasty and me. Toasty will write the story up and do all battles (I will do the battles he is in) and I will do the map. How does this sound?

And then only after Toasty posts the update will I post the map.

Or, Toasty, if you prefer I could write it up and you can do the map.

Either way I want this game to continue, but I can't do it myself because I am also modding two other nes's.
