in Civ IV you could only gain a certail level for your troops while fighting barbarians. Some buildings in the later game, actually required that you have atleast one unit of a specific level. Think it was west point and level 5.

How is this handled in Civ V? Can we only fight barbarians and still get xp like if we were fighting another civ?

The mechanics didnt really work for me in civ IV, since I wasn't that into waging war, and with the AI stacks in towns it wasn't really an option for me in later games. I still wanted to have strong units so I could defend myself.

Now in Civ V it is different. 1UPT does prevent stacking, but how about the xp from fighting barbarians. Is it still like in Civ IV or is it open? you kill something or someone, you get xp.

You get experience for every fight including barbarians and defending against attacks. You get extra experience if you kill the opposing unit.

It has been speculated that XP gained from barbarians caps out.

I've also seen no information that indicates that you get extra XP for killing opposing units, though it certainly sounds plausible.

I thought I heard that you get extra xp for killing a unit from 2kGregs live stream as well as the preview video up on Gamespot, IGN, and GameInformer.

You only get up to level 3 "and" 30 xp vs. barbarians (per strat. guide). That "and" is confusing, but since it is encouraged for a person to not use their promotions it probably should be an "or" meaning 30xp = Level 3 (which means two city buildings = 2 promotions off the bat).

Two likely progressions have been proposed.

Linear
Level 1 = 0xp
Level 2 = 15xp
Level 3 = 30xp
etc.

"Exponential"(? not a math person so I don't know the terms)
Level 1 = 0xp
Level 2 = 10xp
Level 3 = 30xp
Level 4 = 60xp
etc.

Nobody knows that's talking.

I personally hope that they don't max out XP when fighting Barbarians.

Since Germany's and Ottoman's civilization ability are dependant on Barbarians, it would screw them over if they lose XP potential after a certain level.

I could understand that once your unit reaches a certain level, they they only receive half XP from fighting a Barbarian unit.

I don't think there will be such limitations. I personally don't fully understand why they were in Civ 4. Looks like together with some buildings requiring a promoted unit it had a goal of forcing player to go to war.

Strange goal, I must say.
