Quesion about open Borders

I have been getting into the habit of not opening my borders to anyone. I play on the warlord difficulty, and havent run into too many problems...

Are open borders useful for anything besides using missionaries?

Not exactly. Open Borders creates trade routes which provide both you and the other civ with a steady supply of extra commerce, which is then converted into science, culture, espionage, and/or gold.

Unless by gold you meant commerce and not money.
