Can someone please explain how city growth works on standard speed. I found an article about city growth in the war academy, but it was for epic speed. I know each citizen eats two food and when your surplus food reaches a certain amount your population increases.

The amount of excess food to grow on standard speed is 20 + 2*P where P is your current population (so 22 to get from size 1 to 2, then 24, 26, etc.). Otherwise the only things that complicate this are the granary and slavery, and this article explains those:

Usually you have granaries so divide the formula above by 2 to get food requirement for growth. Also negative health will slow growth. It's possible to starve a city and lose pop by working tiles with no food or running too many specialists.

Well, not exactly, but close. Granary stores food up to half of the food bar, which means that if you are size 2 (food bar is 24:food:) you gain 12:food: once you grow to size 3, meaning that if you have exactly enough :food: to grow the :food:bar will be set at 12/26.
