Suppose I'm the Americans and I have a Navy Seal. If I gift it to another Civ, I'm sure it downgrades to a Marine. But will it keep it's special promotions? Seal has March, I believe. Does the gift (which is now a Marine) keep the March promotion?

In SMAC, the equivalent of your vassals would gift you units. I have yet to see a CivIV "ally" ever gift me anything.

That's true, I've never seen an AI gift units in CIV 4. As you say in SMAC they did it all the time. Often useless units, but the cool thing was you could take them to a city and recycle them into the SMAC equivalent of :hammers:

If you gift a civs unique unit to another that civ gets the unique unit. Playing as the Romans I gifted a couple of legionnaires to my chinesse colony and they stayed as legionnaires rather than downgrading to swordsmen. I'm not sure about upgrades but I would assume that they remain.

In older versions of Civ, you also got :hammers: for disbanding units in your cities.
