Question about unit experience

Is there a way to tell which units can gain XP and which cannot? I've read that the golems of the Luchuirp do not, and I had assumed this was because of the "This unit is not alive" trait... but I just summoned a skeleton, which is not alive, and I notice that I can get XP with it...

So, how do I tell which units can or can not gain xp?

Thanks!

All units can get XP, but only such with an unitcombat (disciple, melee, beast,...) can use this XP to get promotions. The promotions your unit can get are determined by this unitcombat. In the civlopedia there is a section about promotions, where you can see wich promotions can be given to wich unitcombats and a section for unitcombats, where you can see wich units belong to wich unitcombat.

Also, if you already have four national units, and you get a fifth one, the fifth one will not be able to gain xp. For example if you have four knights and you capture and enemy's knight, this knight will not gain any xp.

Well that's something that needs a fix imo. If you actually bring down a knight with anything that has command and is not a hero and at the same time get lucky because the chance is not 100% and the enemy does not have the all purpose immunity buff loyalty, you deserve a fifth tier 4 unit. And when it comes to heroes like Sphener, well you still deserve it. Or is command just supposed to get more and more cannon fodder? That's 3 (or 4) promotions that could have been used to make the unit more powerful.

I generally agree with you. National units are generally strong but for the most part I would use them as cannon fodder if I happen to capture a fifth one. Although once I captured a fifth knight playing as the Hippus so I actively tried to keep it alive.

However it could be a pretty big exploit if you got the crown of command and were able to capture 2/3 of all national units if they werent blocked from gaining xp.

This is not true. National limit is only ever checked for ability to create a unit. Once the unit exists, the game doesn't care about it beyond knowing how many are alive to tell if you can build new ones. They gain XP exactly the same way any other unit does.

I would guess that maybe you happened to capture one which was already at or beyond 100 XP and only fought Barbarians?

Nope.
But it Seems fine now. Im guessing that this occurred in earlier versions. I remember getting a clockwork golem from that one event when I already had all four of my own. The golem couldn't gain experience. I dont remember what version this was. Maybe .33? Or was this because I was not able to assemble it correctly?

I also captured a Ljosafar knight which the Svart. captured, and this unit couldnt gain experience.

golems never gain experience points. The knight problem may have been related to a now fixed bug where units with more than 95% withdrawl could not gain exp.

Golems do gain experience exactly as any other unit, they simply cannot spend it on any promotions since they lack a unitcombat.
