Question on Demographics

Ok I look at my demographics everyonce in a while, but I've never been able to understand how a few them of work. Life expectancy, family size, and mfg goods to name a few. And for some reason my military service is always ranked last or second to last.

Can someone help me out here with this. Explain the mechanics
