I'm on a seperate continent, with only one other civ, who I've been at war with for at least a few hundred years. The war is probably going to last for another 50. But, because of this eternal war, and the damn Emp. Diff, we're both really far behind in tech. Basically, neither of us is in medieval, and from wonder announcements, the other 6 civs (standard map) just hit industrial. I can't get across the entirely too big sea to meet any of them. Do I have a chance in hell to win?

Yes, you always have a chance -- as long as you're breathing. Try to stop the war -- definitely stop any research and save up cash (unless you don't have Currency yet which is absolutely vital for marketplaces).

Hope the other civs find you soon and be prepared to buy all the contacts first and then a whole slew of techs.

Get OUT of the war ASAP unless you can win it authoritatively. Try to broker communications to your enemy as part of your initial trade-around.

Definitely can be done, but will probably be difficult.

Yes, you have a very good chance of winning the game. Since you are so behide in tech, don't try to catch up by doing your own research. Set your research rate to zero and try to save as much gold as possible. Eventually, other civs from the other continent will cross over the ocean and discover you. Believe it or not, they will sell you what they consider obsoleted technology at a dirt cheap price. You will catch up at no time! In the mean time, try to eliminate the other civ to get your own continent.

Yes if you can win the war,(demand all they have before you kill them) then you have your very own continent. You should be strong enough then to compete with the other civs. It's just a matter of catching up in techs. With the continent under your control, you should have a suitable amount of tradeable resources that will help you get what you want from the others when you make contact. Also, as you learn techs, like gunpowder and later steam power, that gives you the chance that a couple of new strategic resources will pop up within your borders. These are very valuable to the ai civs so hopefully you will get enough to trade.

Is your continent big enough to make you a candidate for the U.N. Secratary General? If so, you can just keep relations good with everyone else and if they beat you to the U.N. you can still have a good chance of being voted for. So I see a diplo victory possibility.

Diplo victory? There is such a thing? ;)

I have nothing at all useful to add since all the answers you are looking for are  (eyes pointing up).

I would encourage you, however, to at least try to win some way other than spaceship/diplomacy, as they (IMHO) give the game a feeling of wasted time.

Wasted time? Just surviving on this map is hard enough. Thanks for the advice. Somehow I managed to sail a trireme across about 12 squares of sea without it sinking and found the other continent. I mean, goddammit. There's one giant continent with everyone else, and then I get stuck on this tiny island with a military civ, my first time out on Emporer. Anyways, thanks for the advice.

Don't take me too seriously, I was also happy when I stepped up to Monarch a while ago, and won on the first try (spaceship). ;)

It can be tough when you move up to a new difficulty for the first time. I know it's a pain to lose on your first try, but if we always won on our first try, it wouldn't really be any fun or challenge.

Would it? Well it could be fun.:D

Well hell, the first time I stepped up to Monarch, it was easier than any game of Civ3 I'd played yet, playing as the French no less. So I figured Emp. wouldn't be too much harder as an easier civ. Damn I was wrong.

Yep, the gap between Monarch and Emperor is pretty large. Once you master it, however, I think you'll agree that Emperor gives for the best playing experience overall (hard enough to be challenging, not as sick as Deity).
