Ok playing a game as Spain and things are going quite well so far, managed to kill France, killing the Dutch, have Mali and the Vikings as vassals, and about to get gunpowder and the English don't even have Compass yet so I'm feeling happy except for one serious problem:

When my Caravel doing the world tour reached the Incan Empire the Conquerors event didn't kick in. I continued the whole tour and found I was the ONLY person who should have caravels on the high seas at all, so I'm wondering if this has happened to anyone before? I'm not worried about the situation, simply that its going to take a LOT longer to take down the Inca if I have to build and ferry an invasion force over from Spain and Mexico to Peru since I know I'm the only one with Astronomy so first city is no problem and I'm about to kill the other two civs I have to watch out for, so what seems to be going wrong?

Did you meet an innocent-looking Incan Workboat on your way to them before sighting their borders?

There are a number of things:

1) Any other civ (even Japan, China, Khmer) has already made contact with them.
2) You contacted them too early if they haven't had long enough to develop, then you don't get conquerers. It is still possible to lose contact, and contact them again later. I've found that after 1300, you should be fine in getting the event.
3) You are running and old version and made contact by seeing one of their units and not their land area. Maybe you saw a workboat or something. Sometimes I find that even in the current version I don't get this event, so I tend to give my caravel a wide berth of S. America just in case.

What year did you first make contact? If you do so within a certain number of turns from the Incan (or Aztec) spawn date then the conqueror event will not trigger until you first lose contact (can no longer see the civ in the lower right list with the scores) and then make contact again.

Also, as previously stated, if you make contact with a civ without being able to see their cultural territory (such as a work boat or a scout far from home) then the conqueror event will not trigger (and infact is lost for that game entirely).

I think it was the stupid workboat I sighted on the way up, I'm using the most recent version. Ah well, time to wind the clock back to make sure that does NOT happen.

If you move your caravel carefully, you can usually see the work boat before it can see you, owing to the extra visibility that Optics delivers for your units. In this way, opening up new sea territory one step at a time, I have on several occasions glimpsed the work boat and then moved further out to sea and thus avoided making contact too early.

I ended up reloading from just before I discovered the Aztec, switched over to Gunpowder, and had one caravel sit in the Caribbean, the other one go around Africa through Indonesia and arrive at the Inca from behind avoiding the potential problem. Would not have done it that way if I wasn't so far out in front on naval techs, had optics and no one else was even at compass yet so felt safe enough to do it.

Doing this will get some of your units upgraded (depending on which civ you are playing). I think everyone's conqueror catapults become cannons if you have Gunpowder, the French get one of their UU Musketeers and the Spanish get Conquistadors (with Astronomy also I think).

Yeah that's why I switched over, was quite pleasantly surprised to find I got conquistadores to take out the NW. Right now have just taken London, England only has Limerick and Inverness, has no colonies out and is collapsing, I think the early invasion in 1600 did the trick and kept their attentions VERY firmly on me instead of the New World, now to just heal up my troops and hopefully they collapse before I need to hit Inverness, if they don't ah well then I kill some more Englishmen and speed up their demise thus securing the New World for Spain.
