In the most recent GOTM (#3), I was able to get the Great Library and Marco Polo. When I completed the Library, I noticed that all three of my rivals had already discovered pottery and chivalry. I had not discovered either one at that point, figuring that I would get them via the Library. However, I was never given these techs the whole time - I was eventually given bridge building and mathematics as the others came across them, but never the Pottery and Chivalry.

Could it be that since Pottery and Chivalry were likely discovered by everyone (but me) BEFORE I built the Great Library that it does not register? In essence, it will only give you techs that two or more civs have AS they are discovered? I wish I would have known this as I turned down numerous offers to trade for them and lost the Hanging Gardens in the mean time.

Anyone see anything similar to this?

I don't think it gives you the effects only apply to advanced that were made after the library was built. If, however, those techs were traded, then you would get them.

In my humble opinion, it's normal. At least in Civ1, I've read in the user manual that the Great Library gives you all the techs of only 3 civs... That means two things:
_ if you're playing against 7 civs, 3 will be choosen and only these 3 will give you their techs.
_ even though the 3 concerned civs had discovered advances before you build the GL,
that doesn't matter, for you'll have access to everything once built the wonder. Including the ones found before, so.

The way the Library works is thus:

Once built, as soon as any civ discovers a tech, by any means, the computer checks to see if any other civ already has it. If this is true, the owner of the Great Library is granted the tech as well. If all the other civs have the tech in question, then the owner of the GL will not get it that way, because no one is going to research or acquire a tech they already have.

    Buzzzzzzzz, wrong!
Great Library tracks TWO civilizations, and no it isn't retroactive.
On top of that, the possibility will exist that the 2 Civ's you're tracking will be BEHIND you in tech, so you get nothing.

More specifically each time another civ gets a tech (explaining the not completely retroactive) it tests (1) does the great library owner have it ?
if this is no then it tests (2) does a thirds civ also have it? If yes, the the great library gets it its next player turn.

Pyramids can usually be completed before literacy is discovered. That is, if you're using a balanced research agenda.

    Silly potato?

I generally build the Great Library as soon as I can get it, but sometimes other Wonders are available earlier and I build them first. It all depends on the situation.

In my current game Great Library will be the 4th wonder. I had 3 wonders completed on the same turn I discovered Literacy. I have had many hard working settlers but I had a good starting position and am under Monarchy relatively early.

How so? Are you a Wonder Hog or something?
Would you suggest he build the Big Statue first?
