I had an idea for my upcoming ancient empires scenario which would, if it works right, add depth to the game.
Say we're talking Han China or better still, Japan. They had no natural acess to quality horses because those were in the hands of the Turks/Sogdians. Most of the profits made from silk, in fact, went into buying horses. However, eventually the Chinese mouted a huge raid for those horses and started their own breeding programme in Chang'an. The Japanese traded these horses a couple of hundred years later to start tehir own breeding programmes. Now how do I imitate that in the game?
1) Horse Breeding Programme (Tech) is discovered wich allows another resource (called horses (II) and with same icon and pedia entry as the normal horses ) to appear in Chang'an or Nara. This resource, can, presumably be used to build chinese cavalry. However, what about the original horses that the Chinese now control because, for example, they captured Bukhara?
My only solution seems to be to create a redundant unit with the same name, stats, animation but diff. resources (Horses and Horses (II). However this seems somewhat clumsy. Anything else I could possibly do?
Mind you, the same could be done for Iron or Gold (Strategic for elite mercenary units, for example) where the original Iron or Gold has a chance of running out but Iron (II) and Gold (II) appear after a tech called Shaft Mining and never run out (deeper, larger deposits). Iron-requiring units would now be built with eitehr the original Iron or Iron (II) and Mercs can be built with Gold or Gold (II). What can I do short of creating say, Merc and Merc (II) with diff. required startegic resources but otherwise identical?
