Questions about starting an OCC game

On a whim, I decided to try my hand at an OCC game, but I didn't want to make it too hard on myself, so wanted a decent city site. Every time I started, I kept getting absolutely HORRIBLE terrain. Whenever I found a good 3-4 special site, it was always something like 6 swamp, 4 hills, 4 mountains, a couple desert, plains and ocean. I can never seem to get many rivers ANYWHERE, and tend to have a ton of swamp/jungle.

Is there a preferred configuration that is more likely to get a decent site for an OCC game? Wet/temperate, hot/cool, 3/4/5 billion, etc.

Is it common to "trial and error" several times on the map when starting an occ game on a random map? I was repeatedly getting to 3000 bc with no decent city sites, so I just quit and restarted. Does it normally take 20+ turns to find a site? Or am I just too picky?

Well, I have never played OCC, but sometimes the time spent wandering looking for the ideal city site can be very rewarding, if you pop a horse out of a hut, then you can go hut hopping, getting lots of advances and NON units without running into barbarians! Sometimes good scouting produces faster (if random) development than building a city right away.

I've never even tried OCC, but I think you could start with less than you seem willing to start with.
Yes, just an uninformed opinion, before I get told how stupid I am again.

I never tried OCC either but there are ways to cahnge your terrain for a suitable OCC site.

First make sure you choose the 5 billion year age. This will produce a greater randomness in your terrain, hopefully giving you a nice combo of different resources and regular squares.

Second I'd go with a wet and mild climate. The wet will produce a lot of rivers and the mild climate will produce more food producing lands.

Third, I'd recommend a large land mass in continents. This will also increase the likelihood of rivers and give you a greater range of sites to choose from.
