Quests - are they worth the trouble?

I had my share of 'quest' type random events, but because the requirements were... not in my game plan, and the rewards were not mentioned, I decided they were not worth the trouble.

However, in my latest game, I managed to get two done, and it's mainly the reason why I won.

The first said I should get 12 swordsmen, and I'll get an aditional reward option if I have Hereditary rule when I get them.

I've done that (both), and I got the following reward options:
1. 3 more swordsmen
2. bully population into paying more taxes - +1:mad: , +416 GP
3. Drill 1 for all present and future melee units !!!

Got the third, ofc, and it was really great, especially because I was not aggressive (I played Sitting Bull), and this way I had shock and cover promotions available from the first (just like if I had combat 1).

And this left me with 12 swordsmen with drill 1 and raider 1... :ninja: hehe

Then later I got the one where I had to have 12 musketmen, reward + with Vassalage, and another reward+ with Taj Mahal.

I Managed to get all of these as well, and I got this:
1. an option I don't remeber (quite lame though)
2. free pinch promotion for all current and future musketmen
3. The Golden Age of Muskets

I got the golden age, which started almost imediately after the one from the Taj Mahal ended.

These two events proved to be decisive in my winning the game.
They were both military. I'm curious what kind of other quests are, and especially what are the rewards.

I once got one for the harbourmaster. 9 harbours, 5 Caravels had to be built

Problem though:

I only had 3 rich, protected coastal cities (Pangea Map)
I only had 1 Caravel

Needless to say, come Industrial Revolution... I phailed.

Some quests are worth it, others are not. I had one horse units. Built the stables, and I chose the best option. It wasn't good. I also had to do one for Castles. I think I got castles to provide more gold or I got unit promotions.

My favourites are the ones where you have to spread a corporation. I once was missing gold, I invaded a Civ, got gold and the corporation Mining Inc provided me not just with extra production (from the 3 sources of gold I seized) but also +20 gold per Mining Inc! CHA CHING!!

I also had to once spread Mining Inc around. I did so...
CHA CHING! +20 gold per city with Mining Inc!

Although I did spread corporations to America... I invaded them shortly afterwards, took all their cities and those corporations I spread for my own benefits were in my control! CHA CHING!!!

Is there any way to know what all the random events are (including the "quests")
... I mean... is there a list somewhere?

I once got a quest to build alot of trimeres. I did that and choosed extra movement on all (and further) ships. Then when I got carriers, I've got another quest to build x number of carrier groups. I did that and I choosed that all ships (and further) ships got Combat I for free. I already had a very good fleet at this time since I had participated in one ancient naval war (and won), two reneasance (that word is hard to spell) naval wars (and won) and when I got the quest I was in a naval war. Let say that I ruled the sea. I missed magellan though:(

I think the benefits of quests are mostly too low in contrast to the benefit some random events can get you. Quests should give a greater benefit because they require you to work on them.

For example, the free shock promotion to all axemen is IMO more suited as an reward for a quest than an random event. OTH the castle-building quest is worth it.

Quests also seem to scale in an suboptimal manner with regard to mapsize, civilizations and time.

Some are darn nice..... i got "The best Defense" last night.
build 9 Castles.

with great wall the 3rd option was enabled:

.) city garrisson 1 for all melee (yes, melee)
.) +25 spy points (not %, hard points)
.) +3 relations with all leaders (they were fubared anyways)

so i got all my pike/macemen +20% city defense :)
Take that, indian Knight-zerg!

Also, the 9 forges quest is incredible if you happen to have no metal,
it opens a source of copper (or a free engineer in one city)

build forges, stable, swordsmen etc quests are great, but the ones about building cities on like 16 landmasses are ridiculous. It would become the entire purpose of your game for a meagre reward

Damn it, I was close to that Best Defense one.. but thought sod it it'll be worthless and traded for gunpowder and failed it..

If I knew it was that, I'd have left it until those castles were finished..

Some are really pointless though, like holy mountain etc

As said by Stylesrj: Some quests are worth it, others are not. Founding extra cites for the sake of building a number of libraries, may cripple your economy. An maybe not. That depends.

Building units of a certain kind may be very helpful if the promotion bonus outlasts the unit, but building x chariots for a Combat 1 promotion only for chariots, may not be worth it. The alternative is spreading your state religion to 5 own cities, but I usually have done that already.

But then again: If you're playing Egypt or Persia, you get an extra bonus on your war chariots or immortals.

Building x harbors to give all future naval units Combat 1 or Navigation 1, seems like a good idea. Especially if you’re playing the Dutch or the Portuguese.

I was playing Zara Yaqob when all my future oromo warriors got the Pinch promotion. That was nice.

Ghandi was Knight-zerging you ?

:rotfl:

That's a first...

Would have been indeed, but it was Asoka (the forgotten indian).
You wouldnt believe the SODs he sent at me...

EDIT:

Best Defense Reward clarification:

.) city garrisson 1 for all melee
.) +25 spy points from Great Wall (as opposed to just 25 which would have been bad)
.) +3 relations with all leaders

I always try to fulfill a quest, if only for the fun and challenge of it.

Some of the quests are a bit backwards. For instance, the "horse whisperer" IIRC requires you to build X stables, which requires Horseback Riding. One of the selectable rewards is X chariots.

Sorry, but by the time I have HBR, I'm not really interested in Chariots. I'd rather have freebie mounted promotions, a herd of Horse Archers, etc.

I got the option for six HAs:confused:
Did you not have archery?

I like to try most of them, but the one I consistently ignore is where you are asked to build 10 chariots in the ancient era. Why on earth would I ever do that, delaying getting iron working in order to build a bunch of really weak units?

I like the swordsman quest, though, and even did the "find the holy mountain" thing once.
