Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I wrote a little python script that logs saving and loading into an encrypted file. I hope it'll be a little bit better than the session counter because I suspect the game, that you can load the same savegame how many times you want and still it will be counted as +1 session.
no, if you start again, from the same save, you have +1 session.
I have a few replays with session 1, 2, 3 and 4 occur before any move is done :lol:

Are you sure? Didn't you save the game again in the same turn? Because if you didn't, that would mean, that the game actually alters the savegame file you are loading. I will check it out, but I doubt that...

I started a game, saved. Loaded, loaded, loaded, loaded, saved again with the same name, loaded and loaded (nothing more, no moves). Then I retired and the replay reported three sessions. So you can load all over again the same savegame file and it will always be reported as a start of the same session.

Sometimes on my laptop when I get really late into a game my computer crashes with virtual memory being the problem. As a non-computer nerd, does anyone know what this obvious (but not to me) problem is and how can I rectify it please?

Virtual memory is stored on your HDD and CIV can be very resource demanding in the late game (especially when you play huge maps with a lot of nations). Do you have the latest patch? Are you playing a MOD?

You can manually set more memory if you have enough free space on your HDD.

Try some guide (microsoft guide is not suitable for normal people, pick something else ;)):

Just playing traditional Civ IV without any mods or patches.

I'll try the guides you suggested. Many thanks. :)

Wait, are you playing with NO patches? Are you sure? There is the About This Build option in the Advanced Menu, if you have Vanilla Civ (No Warlords), the Civ Version property should say 161. If there is anything lower, PATCH your game. The patches resolve a lot of problems with the game. The only problem is, that the patch slightly alters the gameplay (I think "the chopping is not efective until Mathematics" was introduced in 161).

I wanted to make it so that cities have to be spaced further apart, creating more strategy during wars, by having to navigate more terrain to reach each city. I made a simple change to the xml/globaldefines file

<Define>
<DefineName>MIN_CITY_RANGE</DefineName>
<iDefineIntVal>2</iDefineIntVal>
</Define>

I changed the value from 2 to 4. This worked great on land, however, it doesnt work in for islands out in the ocean. This creates problems when there are a lot of islands. I was wondering why this doesnt apply to islands in the ocean, and how can i fix it. i tried using the borders over ocean mod but it doesnt help for this particular problem...

No, I think it is you get more :hammers: from chopping after mathematics.

How do I obtain an avatar to go along with my name. Everyone else seems to have one and I want one!! Marciv.

Perhaps this is on the edge of the topic, but I hope you can help me anyway...

When I tried to start a hotseat game, all civs were human controlled, even if a flagged them as AI. How come and what do I do?

Thank you very much. Don't be fooled by my selection though!!

I have noticed while playing that the Islamic Monastery has never once shown itself as an actual building in game, it's benefits are still there and it is listed in the building list in the city screen. Is this a graphics error or is there something I can do to fix this?

what is drafting a unit

In the city screen, you can click the 'draft' button to sacrifice population to instantly give you a unit. I believe it starts with Musketman, then Riflemen, then Infantry as you get the techs necessary for those units. You can only draft if you are running the Nationhood civic enabled by Nationalism.

And it will cause the "Hell NO We won't go!" Anger....
