Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I have heard that if you bye BTS you get al of the civilisations and every thing ells exept the Scenerios in warlords, is this true?

To make sure that we understand eachother: You get everything in Civilization IV Warlords except the scenario's, but you do need the basic Civilization IV to be able to install and play BTS.

It is. I enabled anything wit the word java in but still it doesn't work. It must be my computer.
No, that's just because the administrator, Thunderfall, disabled HTML code on this site. It's so he doesn't get a bunch of junk. Say you're on a website and it has this neat tool and you can copy and paste something from a box and have that tool appear right on a website, well that won't work on this website because HTML code is turned off.

And to post a screenshot, you have several options.

1. In the post you want a screenshot in, click the paperclip and upload it there and then a thumbnail of that screenshot will appear at the bottom of the post.

2. Click the red button with an arrow pointing up, and upload your screenshot there. It should give you a code that you can copy and paste into the post to show the screenshot (this works because the code is not HTML code, but vB code, notice it has
at the end.
But you see if you upload a screenshot, in my experiences the file needs to have a lowercase extension for the
to work. Before you upload the file, find it on your computer, then click Tools (at the top)>Folder Options>View (the tab at the top) and then make sure "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" is turned off. Then look at you file and make sure that all the letters after the period (.) are lowercase. Then you can upload the file. (If you took a screenshot with CivIV it probably will be in all caps so you need to fix that.)

3. Upload it to something like http://www.imageshack.us. You will figure out how to use that from that site.

And about spoilers, I don't know what to tell you. Just click the Show button and see if it works.

Spoiler :
YAY IT WORKS!!!

But I don't know and I haven't seen it on the board. Tried searching the FAQ and threads..

How does one use multiple mods?
Mainly, civilization-adding mods. I'm kinda obsessed with having several civilizations, and it'd be neat to have many of the custom civilizations in one game. (Like Iran, Israel, America in place of Iraq, etc. on a middle east map)

this is non-trivial since they all alter the same file(s) so you would have to manually merge those...

Ah.
...Going to guess that's extremely complicated?

The problem is that they probably deleted some other civs and not simply added one - if that is the case you might need to do the same and replace even more civs. Other then that it is not too complicated:
just compare the files that come with the mods and add all lines that are different to on combined file...

That's the problem. There is nothing to click on. Just a picture.
Looks like image shack works though. Thanks.

How does one turn on extended play ?

What do you mean by extended play?

Do you mean the "slower" game speeds--epic and marathon--which include more turns in the overall game? You select your game speed when you initialize the game--either in the standard menus or the custom game menu.

If you mean playing beyond 2050 AD, just keep playing. If a victory condition has been achieved, no further score is kept, but the game can keep going and going. Be warned that inflation will get out of hand after a while and cripple your economy; in some ways the game isn't really designed to be played beyond 2050.

Sounds like a graphics card problem - the popup probably says "Failed to Allocate Graphics Memory" and tells you to reduce the graphics settings.
Try the following two: ingame click on Advanced -> Options -> Graphics and use lower graphics settings (there are a few checkboxes).
Open CivilizationIV.ini in your My Games directory (actually in that directory there are subdirectories for each of Vanilla, Warlords, BtS whatever your poison is ;) - and in those directories you find a .ini). All options in there are commented and some say may preserve memory - set those to 1.

Actually, I'm thinking it's a cross between a card error and software. This was happening VERY occasionally before I installed 1.74 & DirectX 9.0c. I've tried reducing the graphics. First to medium - it happened again. Then to Low - where it still happened. However, now the dialog boxes are no longer blank and do indeed say exactly what you mentioned.

I opened the INI file. There are many "memory" entries, but "preserve" is not one of them....

I'll admit that this is probably the most taxing thing I ask my PC to do. So, it COULD be an error in the video section... I run a VANILLA Dell PC, with 1 Meg (maybe 2).

So, can I buy a graphics card?? How involved is installing it?? Something beyond opening the case and plugging it in??

Thanks!! BTW, I tried posting this in the Tech Support forum, but so far NO replies - in about a week!!

Actually what I meant where these:
Code:
; Dont show the game background during movies - may speed up movie playing
HideMovieBackground = 0

; Allows some memory savings *** ALT-TAB WILL NO LONGER FUNCTION ***
MemSaver = 0

; Disable PAK memory mapping (May affect performance)
DisablePAKMemoryMapping = 0

; Don't skip frames if falling behind
BinkNoSkip = 1

; Copy entire image each frame, not just dirty pixels
BinkCopyAll = 1

; Show movies using hi-color, not true-color (may be faster)
Bink16Bit = 0

; Copy ever other scanline during movie playback (faster)
BinkInterlace = 0
Especially all those Bink thingies have to do with graphics and the setting opposite to what is shown will save some graphics memory...
The Tech Support section does not have very many views - I make a habit of stopping by there every couple of weeks or so and I assume most other people who do not post there own problems there are not much more active either...

I have a question because of a big mistake i have made.
I broke my Civ CD in 2 so i can't play the game any more, so i wonder if there is a way to use the game without a CD or do i have to buy a new one?

:band:Welcome to CFC[party]:dance:
In the US Take 2 does exchange broken CDs (link) You might want to contact whoever is distributing it in Denmark if they offer a similar service. Discussing copyright breaking cracks is not allowed on this forum so I cannot help you with the no cd stuff :)

Your game package and/or manual should tell you whom to contact in Denmark, I am sorry I don't know. Alternatively you can send Take 2 an email here.

Sorry if this is a repost,
but I was wondering if there was any way to get the Civ IV music onto Itunes.
Its just too cool...

Thanks

Hey guys, could someone direct me to a thread where it explains combats. Example, like who should you attack with against a certain Unit. How the points work (mathematical), and a stupid question, what is a mounted Unit :blush:

I go deep into a game then i get slaughtered while Attacking!
