I don't believe your rep gets damaged from failed spy operations. Then again, I could be terribly wrong :D I have yet to see elite spies, another thing I always wondered.

Heroin + Archon = narchon? Wouldn't make more sense if it were DEA + Archon = narchon? :smoke:

I have yet to be able to get a vet spy. I get the spies in place, use them several times, sometimes with success but the never get to vet status. Any suggestions?

Here's my suggestion: switch to Communism or Fascism. Since there is no battle, your spy can never get a promotion. These govts give your spy veteran status which, also unlike normal units, affects your success rates.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what the success rates are for any spy level.

AFAIK, your rep is not affected by spy ops, but you do take an attitude hit from the offended civ. Not 100% on this though.

As for all the Starcraft references....TRAITORS! There can be only one love, and it is CIVILIZATION!!!

If you change to Comm. or Fascism and get vet spys then change back to demo. do the spys keep the vet status.

Is Starcraft turn based game?

No and no.

If you change back to Demo, the spies go back to regular status.

Starcraft is a RTS, or "real time strategy". Basically, the computer is making units and moves at the same time you are. if you have ever played Warcraft or the Command & Conquer series, it's the same thing.

Really? I thought my spy agency simply turned veteran from use. Maybe it did correspond with coming out of anarchy and into communism.

Has there been a War Academy file or anything on it? I can't find one.

Come now, my love for Civ, my first and my last computer game, is strong enough to bear fond memories of Starcraft. Oh man do I need a girlfriend.

Some questions:

1. Let's say that two AI's are trading resources with each other. If I pillage a road that is outside of both their territories (assuming that is the only road connecting them), do I get any kind of rep hits or anything?

2. If I am trading with an AI (i.e. They are getting a resource/luxury from me), then I have to declare war due to an MPP, will that have any effects on the other AI's attitude on me?

3. When trading luxuries, I noticed that AI's won't always agree to a 1-1 trade, I take that to mean that some luxuries are worth much more than others? If that's true, are there any tables, threads around here enumerating the "value" of each luxury?

4. Does the AI ever use the "Steal Tech" spy ability?

Thanks in advance.

Nope, this is something I do alot. Human players don't take kindly to this during MP though ;)

I'm not sure about #2, those type questions annoy the hell out of me :p

It is circumstancial. In example, You have 5 luxuries, and marketplaces. The AI only has 1 luxury, and no marketplaces. In this instance, if you were to trade a lux for a lux, that lux would give you an extra 3 happy faces in your market cities, whereas for the AI, they would only get 1 happy face in every city. Thus, making it more valuble to you, hence you have to pay more.
There are other factors too, like the size of your civ compared to theirs. If you have a bigger civ, you are going to get a greater benefit from the exchange. As more people are going to be made happy.
It's just logical :)
Does the AI ever use the "Steal Tech" spy ability?
I don't know, but i've been playing Civ since 2001, and have never noticed it...

Hope that helps :)

ShowMeTheMoney:

As for #1 - No and it's a good thing to do as it causes problems for the AI and will often force them to change governments, meaning a short period of no production (anarchy)

#2 - Yes, you take a same rep hit as it you declared war on your own or pillaged a connecting road.

#3 - Gainy Bo had a very good answer on this

#4 - I think they do. A couple of games ago (in PTW) there were on only 3 AI left and 2 were still in the middle ages, Germany completed researching Espionage on one turn and I traded him Medicine + a little cash for it. And the next turn he had industrialization (must have stole it from me using the cash I gave him).

Is there a way to clear rubble? (sorry if it was asked before)

If I disable some of the victory conditions, does the AI take it into account in their gameplay?

In PTW doing the ring city placement do I count as crow flies or land tiles only? What I mean is if I have a deep bay and put a town on the other side of the bay can I count the squares straight across the water.

And the most serious question:
Why since I have started reading Civ Fanatics has my playing got worse!!!?
I'd never lost on Monarch level before...

Mathilda:

#1 I don't think so

#2 Look for a member named Dianthus and in his signature is a link to a tool set he's created. One of the items is CRPrings that will show possible city placements for a given location.

#3 Just bad luck and getting used to playing new ways. Learning new ways to play may bring short term losses but pave the way to victories at higher levels in the future

1)
Not sure if the AI takes any victory condition into account during their gameplay...

2)
Like crow flies, but depends on the crow's course.:)
Crows flying to N, E, S, W can only count in steps of 1.5 per tile, diagonal flying crows count 1 per tile.

3)
:hmm: Maybe you have been reading the civ2 subforum...? :joke:

Tada! One signature complete with link as requested :).

That's probably because you're getting distracted by the details you previously ignored. Are you trying to do too much - build all the wonders and wage war at the same time?

If you've never lost on Monarch before then you're doing pretty good.

In PTW doing the ring city placement do I count as crow flies or land tiles only? What I mean is if I have a deep bay and put a town on the other side of the bay can I count the squares straight across the water.
Yes. Take the minimum distance possible. 'X' directions count 1 and '+' directions count 1.5. Round the sum down.

Can someone give me info on what (We Love The King Day) does?
Does it lower Corruption or Waste? or both. And by what percentage does it reduce by?

I think both but I don't know the percentage. It also makes the city more resistant to propaganda. I don't know if it affects culture flips or not.

WLTKD

here's a small thread that basically says that a WLTKD is equal to a courthouse in the city, which would translate to 10%, IIRC.

Thank you all.
Yes, I am propably trying out too many new things at the same time.
When I read about how different people think it's elementary to build a granary first or have three scouts before anything else or settler factories or whatever else I can see their point and quickly loose sight of the whole picture. At the same time I've been trying out diffrent civs instead of my old favourite the chinese and maybe that's just too many thigs in one go. Patience has never been one of my vitues though.
Now I've had to go back to chinese for at least one game to see that I can still win at this and yes it's going well again.

I've been lurking on some of the succession game threads and been looking at the dotmaps there and thought it was the other way round, that diagonal squares count 1.5 or did I misunderstand?
